[Maine-birds] Hummingbird behavior question

We have a gravel path next to our hummingbird feeder and tonight a male hummer has come a couple of times to sit and rest on the gravel. I've never seen a hummingbird do this and wondered whether we should worry about him. He is sitting with his beak up, not feeding, and flies off if we go out. In fact, he just returned while I was typing and is sitting there now. The food in my feeder is fresh and I cleaned it thoroughly two days ago.  Is he warming himself on the gravel? Any other ideas?
