My father took several trips out to Machias Seal Island in the 80s and 90s to take photographs of puffins. I wonder if this was his Captain. (My father was also a Captain, retired from the Navy.) If so, I'm sure they're still talking boats and waves and birds.

Capt. Purcell Corbett passed away this past Friday after a long illness. He was 96 years old. After spending 15 years at the Little River Lighthouse off Cutler he then spent 18 years operating a tour boat out to Machias Seal Island. He once partnered with Barna Norton who gained national attention with the claim that Machias Seal was part of Maine and not Canada. Purcell and Barna regularly planted the American flag on Machias Seal for years only to have the Canadian lightkeepers remove it. Purcell always maintained a good friendship with the Canadian lightkeepers. Many of us older birders will certainly remember him, his boat, and his stories on the way out to see the Puffins.
