Visitors:
14 people stopped by today plus another 60 or so students from Greely Middle School who were on a treasure hunt with teachers, learning about geology.
Weather:
Not very welcoming weather for the first day of May. Winds were strong and steady from the southeast shifting to straight east by the second hour and then back to southeast. A light mist and drizzle was being blown into my face for a good portion of the day, making it difficult to keep my binoculars clear.I took a hiatus from counting midday due to deteriorating weather and came back up at 2pm and decided to stick it out. The wind chill gave the impression of much colder temperatures, with an air temp that hovered around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. My thermometer only moved by .5 degrees Celsius for the time I was there. As of this writing, Portland has had a high of 44 and a low of 43 degrees Fahrenheit. If that holds for the rest of the day it will be the smallest temperature fluctuation on record for May.
Raptor Observations:
I did not see the birds I thought I might. Ospreys and Harriers were nowhere to be found.Although one very soggy local Turkey Vulture took to the air around the summit. My one countable bird for the day was a Merlin that blew past the mountain in typical Merlin fashion. Hi, bye.
Non-raptor Observations:
Hawkwatch Junco was feeling confident today, leaving the safety and cover of the Juniper bushes to scrounge for tiny morsels of food on the wide open summit.
Predictions:
Tomorrow appears to be mostly cloudy in the morning with some breaks of sun in the afternoon. We may see some showers during the day. High temps may get into the 60s. Wind direction looks good for migrants, mostly south and southwest at about 5-10mph. This is the first time since Saturday we've had southwest winds predicted, and given the flight we had on the weekend, tomorrow could be another descent day as long as rain holds off.
