no, they are not live puffins.
But the organic food aisle at Shaws has Puffins Cereal from Barbara's
Bakery in several varieties (original, multigrain, etc.) All the
packages have puffin photos on them, and the Puffins Original box has
a picture of Steve Kress on the back, along with a description of
Barbara's commitment to supporting Project Puffin.
As I understand it from the website at barbarasbakery.com consumers
can send in one or more box tops / UPC codes to Barbara's - after they
accumulate 250 box tops, Barbara's sends $100 to Project Puffin to
adopt a puffin. If they get 250 box tops at one time from an
individual or group, then the cereal purchaser gets an acknowledgment
and details about the adopted puffin.
I am not a cereal eater, but I did buy several boxes for birders on my
Christmas list.
If anyone eats Puffin Cereal (which contains no puffins, by the way)
let me know how it tastes.
As an aside, on Hog Island this past summer, I did meet a few birders
who confessed to having tasted cooked puffin when served it in the
arctic regions where it was apparently legal at the time.
