Twenty members and friends of the Augusta Bird Club conducted the 37th-annual MEAU Christmas Bird Count yesterday.
Fifty-one species were recorded, two above the count average of 49 species.
5,491 individuals were seen, 1,032 below the annual average of 6,523 birds.
A single female Brown-headed Cowbird was the first of this species seen since 2004. Cowbirds had been seen annually between 1976 and 1985. Since then sightings have become much more sporadic.
A single Wood Duck became the fifth individual of this species to be counted since 1974.
The 14 Horned Larks at the airport were the first to be seen since 1995, when four birds were recorded. No other counts included this species.
The full species list and individual numbers can be found on the trips page at www.augustabirds.org.
