[Maine-birds] Harpswell raptors

While we have not yet had a chance to do a proper tally, on Tuesday (9/17) we had the largest raptor movement off Basin Point in South Harpswell that the Appells, Teresa Wood, and I have seen here in the 40-45 years that this hawk-watching site has been in operation. The rough tally for the day was 1480, with Broad-winged Hawks making up 85-90% of the raptors. Our largest kettle of Broad-wings was about 300, with numerous smaller kettles in the 100-200 range. The flight built slowly, peaked in late morning and early afternoon, then tapered off.
