This afternoon (9/18) while waiting in a line of east bound traffic to get thru construction of the Route 9 bridge across the Mousam River in Kennebunk I noted a large long-tailed flycatcher flying along parallel to the east edge of the marsh. It flew at about the height of a telephone wire. As it neared the bridge the bird made a sudden U-turn and returned north from where it had come. With naked eye the bird appeared generally white below, darker above. It had a very long tail and distinctive flight. That was about all I could see in a few seconds. I pulled off the road, got out of the car, dug out my bins but could not relocate the bird although I was only able to spend about 15 minutes looking. Observing was hampered by construction noise, heavy traffic including busses and construction vehicles that kept obscuring my view. If you are in that area, please keep an eye out.
