[Maine-birds] Monhegan - 17-18 Sep

The National Audubon Hog Island trip to Monhegan led Tom Johnson, Scott Weidensaul, Ben Clock, PDV and 24 troopers was propitiously timed - we arrived yesterday at 9:00 am.

No great rarities, exhale Doug, but lots of birds, particulars below.

Highlights included:
Imm Yellow-crowned N-Heron hoping for the Cretaceous. Lots of hawks, i.e., 60+ Sharp-shins, 70+kestrels, 45 Merlins - but zero Peregrines - the biggest surprise of the trip, 21 species of warblers, etc.. Monhegan at it's best. Lots of birds to study and enjoy.

I was very surprised at the absence of other birders, we were essentially the only ones of the island. I know the last week of Sep-early Oct is prime rarity season but early to mid Sep provides the greatest number of birds.

Best, Peter
