Visitors:
The summit was quiet this afternoon, only one hiker made his way up to
visit the hawkwatch.
Weather:
The rain tapered off by late morning, leaving behind a suffocating curtain
of fog that took its time clearing. It was mid-afternoon before the
overcast lifted above Bradbury's summit and the count could begin. By the
time the hawkwatch started, temperatures had found their way to 50F, and
continued to rise whenever the stratus thinned enough to reveal a world of
sun and cumulus high above. The wind was light and rambled in different
directions through the afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
The first few Broad-winged Hawks worked their way up into the overcast,
while local birds kept watch below. Later in the day, Sharp-shinned Hawks
zipped low over the trees while other broad-wingeds searched for a last bit
of lift to send them a little further north. Most of the day's birds came
in the final hour of the count, which bodes well for tomorrow.
Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptor Migrants:
Common Merganser- 2
Double-crested Cormorant- 25
Tree Swallow- 6
Brown-headed Cowbird- 1
Predictions:
At last, we're in for a day of SW flow and temperatures that could hit the
mid-60s. Any overnight fog and showers will hopefully clear before the
hawkwatch is set to start. The wind will be out of the West in the morning,
shifting SW and becoming gusty later in the day. Wind speed will increase
from 5 to 15mph. The potential is there for a good flight tomorrow, and we
are only 105 migrants away from setting a new count record this season.
Come on up and see some hawks!
