First was a Broad-winged perched in a treetop bordering the open marsh areas along the Veazie Railroad trail after the end of Taylor Road. It was calling while perched and those calls attracted several Blue Jays, one of which struck it in the head a few times while the others scolded. The Broad-winged valiantly stayed around, flying to other nearby treetops while the Blue Jays followed it.
On the way back out, a Red-shouldered that flew low across the road by the second pond was seen, just before a Common Nighthawk was heard in the same vicinity. Finally, a second RSHA (3/4 of a mile or so from where the first was seen) was splashing around on the edge of the first pond (probably after a frog) before it took off.
Not related to the others, but it seems that a lot of Spotted Sandpipers were migrating through last night. I head at least 4 “peet-weet” calls overhead while walking my dog in Bangor.
