[Maine-birds] Maine birder makes the cover of The Auk, congrats Jonathan Mays!

The latest issue of The Auk (Ornithological Advances) features
close-up photo of an adult Virginia Rail eyeing its marsh at Pleasant
Lake, Maine. The photo was taken by former resident Jonathan Mays,
past chair of the Maine Bird Records Committee and naturalist
extraordinaire with Maine IF&W.

His cover photo spotlights a paper by Ellen Robertson (Jonathan's
wife) and Brian Olsen (UMaine) on how Soras and Virginia Rails adjust
the height of their nests in response to water level changes,
balancing the need to nest in water deep enough to deter predation and
yet shallow enough to avoid flooding. (One of the main nest predators
is that nasty little sprite, the Marsh Wren, which I love and suspect
will search for nests in vegetation over any depth of water.)

Congratulations Ellen and Jonathan! And Brian too, of course.

P.S. previous "cover artists" from the Maine birding community include
Luke Seitz, whose photograph of a Long-tailed Antbird (Drymophila
caudata) made the cover of The Condor in 2012
