This is a stunner!
There are a few records for eastern North America (Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania). The nearest record I know about is from the Lake Erie shore August 18, 1979. One of the Florida records is for precisely this time of year, March 16-24, 1968. Another in Florida was February 6, 1978. Both of those are from the Gulf side. I think there are at least 10 accepted records for Texas. So unless I've missed something, this would be the first Atlantic coast record for the species. Wow!
The non-breeding range of Surfbird is one of the most extensive in linear coastline miles that I know, occurring from south coastal Alaska south to southern Chile, a distance of about 11,000 miles. It wouldn't be the first rocky shore shorebird from the Pacific to make it to the East Coast. There is a record of Wandering Tattler for Massachusetts, for example. But still, amazing find.
Needless to say, if folks do see this bird, please send your descriptions and photos to Doug, who is secretary of the Maine Bird Records Committee.
