My bluebirds haven't returned either. I last saw one in my neighborhood in early March, but it was bitterly cold after that and I wonder if did him in. My tree swallows have stopped by, but not stayed, again, because of the cold. Looking forward to the warm up next week.

I noted your bluebird observation with interest; I have had at least one pair nesting here in West Kennebunk for at least the last 14 years but have not even heard one so far this spring. The nesting boxes are up and the tree swallow neighbors are back but no bluebirds. I also have not seen them in 2 other areas between here and Biddeford as I normally do each year. Probably just an anomaly but I do miss them being about and hope it is a temporary absence... Sharon in West K.

Subject: [Maine-birds] Barn Swallow- FOY - Unity Rd/Sebasticook River - Benton Farm
FOY Barn Swallows - fun to watch as they jet around like acrobats. It will be interesting to count the number that return. Last year 6 to 8 pair arrived and about 34 Barn Swallows left in August. The population returning has been falling off the last few years.
2011 - April 25th
2012 - May 3rd
2013 - Missing date
2014 - May 6th
2015 - May 1st
Interesting that no Blue Birds have returned so far. They usually arrive two weeks before the Tree Swallows, which arrived April 13th this year.
