[Maine-birds] Cave Swallow at Eastern Point, Biddeford 11:20 am

I just got a report of a CAVE SWALLOW flying by East Point, Biddeford Pool.

These Cave Swallows can be tricky to find in the cold and wind. They sometimes are found in sheltered spots along beaches near kelp wrack (insects there) and on the leeward side of rocks. The point is they can be low.

The weather, timing, and set-up for Cave Swallows appearing in the Northeast is discussed in this excellent summary of the recent Franklin's Gull invasion, which exploded (to our south) on November 13th: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/frgu2015/

The Sialia digest is another way to see all the listserv posts for the Northeast. I've mentioned this digest site before, but the way one can scan all the subject lines for a wide area of states is really useful on days like November 13th. Here is a link to that day (as of today):

If you view this link tomorrow or any subsequent day, simply change the date desired to November 13th at the top. Sialia's "Northeast" region lists cover Maine south to Maryland. On the 13th there are at least 111 mentions of Franklin's Gulls, but digging in one reads that over 350 were seen in Cape May, NJ alone.

Our Franklin's Gull on Sebasticook along with a couple of others regionally were precursors to the massive movement, and likely connected in some way, perhaps from an earlier limited eastward movement that set up the mass of birds swept east.
