[Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: Three Greater White-fronted Geese

There are at least three different Greater White-fronted Geese currently in northern Maine.  All of these rare birds are adults of the Greenland ssp and are associating with flocks of Canada Geese.

One of the White-fronts was seen on Saturday during an Aroostook Birders outing to Long Lake in St. Agatha.  The bird was seen on the north end of the lake and was part of a roosting flock of about 2,400 Canada Geese.  A spotting scope was helpful in locating this bird.

A second White-front has been visiting Collins Pond since 4 November.  The bird was present this AM and I was able to get some pics once the sun rose a bit: https://flic.kr/p/zXutZR

Today, during lunch, I checked Lake Josephine in Easton and found the biggest flock of geese of the season so far.  I estimated at least 4,500 geese were roosting here.  (McCain Foods has stopped hunting here this fall and the geese have clearly figured this out as they spend most afternoons loafing here unmolested).  In addition to the White-front there were several Cackling Geese, several leucistic Canada Geese and a yellow collared Canada Goose that was captured and marked in Greenland in July 2014.  I've also put a few pictures of this spectacle in my Flickr photostream:

I don't know for sure whether the Pink-footed Goose has moved on or is still in the area.  I haven't checked Mars Hill Pond since last week and haven't heard any reports, positive or negative since that time.

Bohemian Waxwing numbers are building locally.

Good birding
