[Maine-birds] More Black-throated Sparrow notes and other area birds, 1/17

Hi all,
Zane Baker, Paul Doiron, Kristen Lindquist, Evan Obercian, and I also ventured east in pursuit of the Black-throated Sparrow in Winter Harbor today.

We had it at 13 Barnacle Lane at 10:46 am, where it fed under the feeders for a few minutes with Dark-eyed Juncos. It then flew to the scrub at the end of the cul-de-sac before flying across the open field towards Hillcrest Drive.

We saw it again at 13 Barnacle at 3:13pm, where once again it was with a few juncos. It then flew into a Rugosa Rose bush towards the end of the road, before once again relocating to Hillcrest.

We commented about how "at home" the bird was acting, with a clear routine of trap-lining to its favored food sources. We noted its apparent independence from other birds, only loosely associating with the juncos. This was interesting and in contrast to other reports of it associating with a "mixed flock."

Anyway...in between the visits with the sparrow, we enjoyed a few other birds of note:
~ 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, Rte 186, Winter Harbor, just a little east of the Schoodic Loop Road entrance.
- Schoodic Loop Road:
2 Harlequin Ducks
3 Razorbills
16 Snow Buntings
4 Purple Sandpipers
22 Red-necked Grebe
Family group of 4 River Otters

Great day!

-Derek
