I had noticed the small odd gull described by Scott Hall at Owls Head harbor several times within the past month. Out of laziness, I suppose, I had dismissed the gull as an apparent odd-plumaged 1st-winter ring-billed, although the slightly smaller size, daintiness and fairly uniform dark plumage (deep brown rather than gray tones) didn't quite fit the RBGU profile. This gull definitely needs further study if/when it re-emerges. After checking the Owls Head site this morning, I was rewarded with a family group of 4 pileated woodpeckers that had coalesced around a broken spruce trunk just north of the Lobster Lane entrance. All 4 were present at the same time. A roving northern harrier was cruising the grasses at the airport. At Rockland Harbor, a belted kingfisher continues around the pilings near the Pearl Restaurant.
