[Maine-birds] Shorebirds in Flat Bay, Harrington and Addison Marshes, Whimbrel Return, and other delights!

Today we headed to the Addison marshes to check out the ponds near the Pleasant River Bridge.  There were 19 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Greater Yellowlegs, 80 Semipalmated Plover, 25+ Least Sandpipers and 75 Semipalmated Sandpipers.  What a great place to get nice close looks at whatever is in the pond!

The weekly roundup for Flat Bay is 1,000+ mixed shorebirds on a daily basis (the peeps are about a half-mile from us so in the afternoon facing west it's difficult to see all field marks).  Least Sandpipers, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Semipalmated Plover, Black-bellied Plover, Short-billed Dowitchers, both yellowlegs - and today the return of the Whimbrel!!!!   After a week's absence, 114 birds flew onto the mudflats on the west side of the bay during the evening low tide.

I heard a Yellow-billed Cuckoo while I was walking early this morning - about a half mile from our house.
