[Maine-birds] Rock Wren, Ogunquit, ME, Saturday, pictures

Deb and I went to Perkin's Cove in Ogunquit today to see the Rock Wren that was first reported yesterday.  It was hopping around on the rocks on the ocean side of the Perkin's Cove parking lot.

It seemed to be oblivious to the birders, and occasionally moved to within a few feet of the onlookers.

Hi all,

My observations of note over the past seven days included the following:

8 American Pipits, Highland Road, Brunswick, 11/21.

1 Fox Sparrow, feeders here at the store, 11/21.

1 Turkey Vulture, over the store, 11/24.

100+ Horned Larks and about 40 Snow Buntings, Mayall Road, Gray/New Gloucester, 11/25.

[Maine-birds] Yellow-throated warbler continuing

The Yellow-throated Warbler that Fyn Kynd posted about two days ago continues at 1008 Dutch Neck Rd in Waldoboro.  It visited the feeders only twice in the 1-3/4 hr we were there.  As Fyn posted, the homeowner, Jennifer Long, should be contacted via FB Messenger before you visit (see Maine Birds FB group to find her).

Laura's and my list with photos is here:
https://ebird.org/me/checklist/S76770814.

I have tentatively id'ed the bird as belonging to the albilora subspecies from the Western US based on the apparent absence of yellow on the front the of the supercilium.  I'd be happy to be corrected if someone feels otherwise.

[Maine-birds] Dark morph Rough-legged Hawk - Union, 11/24

Hayden Keene and I observed a 70% dark chocolate morph Rough-legged Hawk at Clarry Hill in Union this afternoon around sunset. The bird was foraging low around the summit with much hovering. It was a very dark bird overall, only showing some pale in the flight feathers, otherwise a deep brown overall. Really fun to see this uncommon color morph!
A pair of Lapland Longspurs and Snow Buntings continue as well.

[Maine-birds] Join us for a virtual Birds of Maine book launch on Dec. 3

We hope you can join us on Dec. 3 for a celebration of Maine birds and Maine birders.

I hope you've heard about the publication of Birds of Maine, the comprehensive new overview of Maine birdlife authored by the late Peter Vickery. A team of birders and loved ones banded together when Peter passed away in 2017 to bring the book across the finish line.

On Dec. 3 at 7pm Maine Audubon is hosting a virtual book launch to celebrate the life of Peter Vickery and the completion of Birds of Maine. The event is free to join.

Speaking at the event will be a host of luminaries directly involved in the production of Birds of Maine, including:

  • Barbara Vickery, Peter's life partner and former conservation biologist for TNC

  • Scott Weidensaul, author of more than 30 books on birds and nature

  • Jeff Wells, National Audubon Society

  • Bill Sheehan, ME Dept. of Environmental Protection

  • Charles Duncan, Shorebird Recovery Project

Please register here for this free event, where we'll raffle off a free copy of the book and also raise a toast to Peter and the team at the end.

Good birding,
Nick

[Maine-birds] RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD CONTINUES, Yarmouth, through 11/22.

Hi all,

We just received word that the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues in Yarmouth!  It is apparently sporadically visiting the Billmeier's feeders once again, but has been inconsistent and sometimes disappears for several days. I do not know of the other location(s) that it must be feeding at.

Here are the visiting instructions from the original post, which I believe is also the text for the "Stakeout" on eBird:

An immature male Rufous/Allen's Hummingbird is coming to a feeder in Yarmouth and the homeowners, Randy and Nancy Billmeier are graciously welcoming visitors.

It has been present since (October) 17th or 18th... at 97 Ledgewood Drive in Yarmouth. Ledgewood is a lightly traveled neighborhood road, but it is rather narrow. Please park along one side of the road only (the homeowner's side/odd numbers) so as not to block traffic. Please be sure not to block any driveways, and avoid turning around in driveways whenever possible. We saw numerous young children out on bikes despite the weather, so please drive very slowly and carefully.

Once at the house, walk to the white picket fence on the RIGHT side of the house. The small hummingbird feeder is on the backside of the bay window. The best line for observations and photographs is several feet to the right of the gate.

Under no circumstances should anyone enter the yard, neighboring yard, or walk in, through, or on any garden beds.

-Derek

Re: [Maine-birds] SNOWY OWL, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, etc. Clarry Hill

It's less restricted this time of year. It's a commercial blueberry farm, so they mainly don't want people up there getting in the way during the berry harvest season or when they're otherwise working in the fields. But you want to go on a Sunday, because the fields are otherwise full of bird hunters right now. And when you do go, the farmers ask that you heed their "no access" signs and stay on the main road up to the "summit" or on the marked trail that starts at the parking area; unless you have permission to hunt there, you shouldn't go past the summit or onto the fields at all.

Other highlights of the outing included two snazzy LAPLAND LONGSPURS, feeding with at least two Snow Buntings in the dirt road, a small flock of Horned Larks, and a vocal flock of E. Bluebirds just beyond the parking area.

Subject: [Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: Northern Cardinal irruption

I have been enjoying the reports of PIne and Evening Grosbeaks well south of their usual winter range this year.  Numbers of both of these species have recently been above normal and well-distributed here in the northern part of the state as well.

I wanted to note that there also appears to be a large influx of Northern Cardinals into the northern part of the state this fall. Cardinal overwinter in this area annually, but are typically seen in low numbers and usually reported primarily at intown locations.  This year cardinals started being reported across southern Aroostook and northern Penobscot counties in late October.  Numbers have been building since with many birders reporting multiple birds at their feeders as far north as Caribou.  Two females and a male at my feeders make a high count in the 30 years I've lived here.

Redpoll flocks are abundant in the woods and fields, but these haven't been visiting any feeders yet (that I have heard).  Both flavors of nuthatches also seem to be numerous this fall.

I have gotten a couple reports of Snowy Owls locally but they seem to have been passing through and were not relocated.

Northern Shrikes and Bohemian Waxwings are being seen in typical numbers for the season thus far.

Good Birding!

Bill

Re: [Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: Northern Cardinal irruption

I saw in interesting eBird graphic of cardinals all the way up the Gaspé Peninsula. There were even a few reports along the north shore of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence nearly up to Labrador!

Bill
