[Maine-birds] Re: Rough-legged Hawk/Richmond

Sean, thanks for posting several times about the Rough-legged. A beautiful bird! I agree wholeheartedly. Danny Danforth and I drove to Richmond today and relatively quickly spotted it a fair distance away (good scope views though), across an open field from Weeks Rd about 100 yds north of its intersection with Beedle Rd. It swooped to the ground out of sight for a moment then reappeared, empty-taloned, in a neighboring tree. After 20-30 minutes it took flight, soaring ever higher overhead in graceful arcs, until it disappeared to the SE.

Re: [Maine-birds] breeding codes

This may be redundant but may be useful that two letter codes indicate levels of "confirmed" breeding while single letter codes represent lesser possible or probable codes. Perhaps people have noticed that. Not sure if it has been stated explicitly.

Hope this is of some use

Another thing to consider, on 4 February 2020, Andy documented these birds bringing sticks to the nest and appropriately coded that observation as NB--Nest Building. NB is considered a "confirmed" breeding code, so for the atlas, Bald Eagle is Confirmed in the Alfred SW block, and done for the atlas! The reason I mention this, is we'd love to encourage birders to work on completing Priority Blocks this year. The Alfred SW block is already complete, but there are Priority Blocks adjacent to the east (Alfred SE) and south (North Berwick NW: https://ebird.org/atlasme/block/43070C6NW) that need more effort to complete.

As we head into the third breeding season for the Maine Bird Atlas, take a minute to review the effort map and see where priority blocks are that need your help: https://ebird.org/atlasme/effortmap

Re: [Maine-birds] mystery duck

It looks fine for an American Wigeon--my interpretation of that white collar is that its part of a wave of water.  It appears to be connected more to the water than a feature  on the bird.

[Maine-birds] Re: mystery duck

It's something with American Wigeon in it. It could be 100% Wigeon just with some anomalous coloring, or it could be a hybrid of some sort. What's throwing me off is that little bit of white on the collar.

[Maine-birds] Maine Bird Atlas - New Wetlands Available for Adoption! Volunteers Needed!

Although there are still a few more weeks before the Maine Winter Bird Atlas' survey window closes, in just a few months our wetlands will fully thaw and our herons, bitterns, and rails will begin their northern flights back to their breeding grounds here in Maine.

After a successful first season of surveys, the Atlas' Secretive Marsh Bird Project has just added a great number of wetland survey sites all throughout the state. We are currently seeking volunteers to adopt and monitor these wetlands for secretive wetland bird species during the 2020 field season.

Here is a link to the project site with project info and a map of all the available wetlands: https://www.mainenaturalhistory.org/mebirdatlas-marshbirdsurveys. Click on any marsh of interest with the map for details on accessibility. While some wetlands can be easily accessed from the roadside, others will require a short hike or paddle. The level of adventure is up to you!

Act fast if you are interested in a particular marsh as these may be adopted quickly! Contact me at logan@hereinthewild.com to adopt your wetland and to receive more information regarding this exciting project.

Happy birding and enjoy this weather!

[Maine-birds] Turkey Vultures

My husband and I were birding down in Gardiner along the Kennebec River up to Augusta and we saw three turkey vultures. One over the river in Gardiner and two in Augusta. On the open water in Gardner there were 35 to 40 Mallards, one common Goldeneye female, many Herring gulls and a half-dozen Ring-billed Gulls. We also had an adult Bald Eagle in the trees along the river.

A beautiful afternoon for birding!

[Maine-birds] Harris's Sparrow, Etc

Linda Woodard & I went up to Lavant to see the Harris's Sparrow. We were
there over an hour before it finally made an appearance. This was a
lifer for both of us & my 100th Maine bird this year.

Thanks go out to Carol & her husband for their gracious hospitality. Oh,
I can't leave out Molly, their miniature poodle, who greeted us warmly.

On our ride home, I checked Ebird for reports from the Portland area &
saw Brendan McKay's reports on the Lesser Black-backed Gull & Northern
Shrike he saw only about a half hour before we got to Portland. We went
right to Mill Creek Cove & found the gull on the mud flats out at the
mouth of the cove with a number of other gulls. We then went to Wells
Road & found the Shrike teed up on a tree at the east edge of the Jordan
Farm field. We didn't find the Red-winged Blackbird he reported though.

All in all a good day,

Turk

Re: [Maine-birds] bluebirds and others

I've had a group off and on all winter--the first time I've had them all winter.  I often have them in early winter before they head out. They usually come back in March. I will say this may not have been successful for all. The group started with six and now I'm only seeing three.

It's very birdy at my house in Sidney this a.m. I had a female purple finch show up for the first time this winter along with the mob of goldfinches and usual feeder birds (titmice, chickadees, wb nuthatches).

But the bluebirds are the bigger story. They are already defending a nestbox. It was interesting that a) it's only the end of February and they have already picked this one out and b) they drove off a starling who was investigating and a blue jay (?) who wouldn't nest in it anyway. Also it is a group of three bluebirds and not just a pair. Stay tuned.
