[Maine-birds] Sears Island

Sears Island was very active this morning. Lots of kinglets, black-throated green warblers, common yellowthroats, hermit thrust, several flickers. Possibly a male american redstart.

Cheers,
Dave

[Maine-birds] Monhegan Trip highlights, WhatsApp alert

There were many highlights on our recent NJ Audubon trip to Monhegan Island - Sept. 21 - 26, including 20 species of warbler and a number of vagrants, among the 102 bird species recorded. Listing below. Notable were the Double-crested Cormorant nests (at least three) below Whitehead that still contained young (7 young in the 3 nests), something I have never seen at this late date. The butterflies were exceptional, with many species present, but the 1,000+ Monarchs stole the show. Single Minke Whales were seen on the way out on 9/21, from Lobster Cove on 9/24, and the way back on 9/26.

The Monhegan Birds WhatsApp group worked well, with postings being sent/received on numerous occasions. Although concerns about reception on the island sometimes are an issue, we found that in most cases it was not a problem and the alerts went through right away. Another advantage of being in the group is that you are notified of unusual birds timely, even if you aren't on the island. If you'd like to join the group, please download WhatsApp onto your phone and send me you phone number so that I can add you.

As always, seeing friends and fellow birders/butterfliers on the island is part of the specialness of Monhegan.

[Maine-birds] Hills Beach this afternoon?

The pattern the last two days has been for some of the rare terns, skimmers etc. to fly into Hills Beach/Basket Island Causeway (Biddeford Pool) in mid-late afternoon with the tide falling toward low. Low tide tonight is at ~6 pm, so I'd say it might be worth a look if you're in the area between 3:30 - 4 pm and sunset. Yesterday afternoon, there were different rare birds near the rock jetty, in the sand flats between the jetty and the causeway, and on the far (east) side of the causeway, at different times. If you haven't seen these birds yet (especially after multiple tries!), hope you and they end up in the same place at the same time.

[Maine-birds] Unsuccessful Trip to Hills Beach

Yesterday we arrived at the causeway at 1:21 pm and thoroughly searched for the skimmers, caspian terns, and royal tern. we left after just over 2 hours of searching, without finding anything interesting except a banded herring gull (CNZ) and a ring-billed gull with one leg. It turns out, however, that all three of the skimmers, the royal tern, and TEN caspian terns were seen on the beach where we spent over two hours searching, right after we left, by quite a few other birders.
I just realized that i have not seen a rare bird since the end of JUNE (besides a YCNH at great pond, but they can be expected there). I have made five trips to try and find the American Avocets that were in scarborough, two for the wilson's phalaropes, four for a western sandpiper, one for the buff-breasted sandpiper, two for the black skimmers, and now the my first time for the caspian and royal terns. What do these birds have against me?!

I hope these birds decide to show up for the rest of you, and happy birding!

[Maine-birds] Black Skimmers, Gull-Billed Tern at Hills Beach

Saw two skimmers very early this morning (around 6:45) flying up from the north side of the Basket Island causeway and heading south.  They were rather vocal, but I didn't hear or see them again during the rest of the 2.5 hours I was there.

A little later I joined Leon M. on the causeway to scope out the gulls loafing toward the island end; he spotted a curious looking tern in their midst but it was far enough away (and facing the scope head-on) that a solid ID was difficult.  I had taken a few steps in that direction to get a closer look when it got up and flew west and out of sight; fortunately I was able to get a few photos as it passed over us.

Interestingly, Leon and I had both come down to look for the Royal Tern reported by Tom, Josh, Magill, etc. late yesterday.  We didn't see it at all, though the Gull-billed was a nice consolation prize.

My eBird checklist (with photos of both): https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S60187422

[Maine-birds] 3 Ospreys calling

9/27 10:15am, Cape Neddick 2 miles west of Ogunquit, we had 3 Ospreys flying low, making a lot of noise for about 5 minutes right over our house. Chickens and ducks zoomed under cover and stayed silent! All 3 flew east toward the turnpike. Closest fresh water would be way over at Chase's Pond.

[Maine-birds] Scarborough Connecticut Warbler 9/26/19

Shortly before noon today a Connecticut Warbler (first-fall?) flushed from the side of the trail at Mill Brook Restoration Project on the west side of Sawyer Road in Scarborough. Details, photos and location in eBird checklist at: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S60128419. An attempt to refind the bird with a friend about a hour later was unsuccessful. There is no parking lot at this obscure site. You can possibly park along Sagebrush Drive. The nearest parking lot is five blacks south at Memorial Park.

Re: [Maine-birds] Musical Blue Jay

You beat me to it Richard but I was going to say it might  have been one of the O'Jays still trying to get that Love Train started. The first stop might have been (New) England...
We just gotta join hands!

No sign of either as of 1030am.  It's now exactly mid tide, low at 1230, with sandbars mostly exposed. Gull and shorebird numbers very low.

[Maine-birds] Portland More Black Skimmers

We had two flyby BLACK SKIMMERS at our rowing practice around 6:45am this morning 9/23 between East End Beach and Martins Point. They were headed toward the trestle bridge and Back Cove. We rowed up the Presumpscot and did not see them on the way back, but likely still somewhere around.

[Maine-birds] Black Skimmers, Caspian Terns, and mystery Empid, Reid State Park, 9/22

Hi all,

Reid State Park in Georgetown gets on the BLACK SKIMMER scoreboard with 7 this morning, perhaps birds that have been added to the growing flock at Biddeford.  Additionally, I had 5 CASPIAN TERNS, four of which were feeding for a while at the mouth of the Little River. One juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was flying around as well.

But the "one that got away" was what was most likely an ACADIAN FLYCATCHER that I very briefly glimpsed in the treetops (typical foraging location for Acadians as circumstantial evidence) about 1/4mile down Todd's Point Road from the entrance (at the second clearing on the left that you can see the water from). I just couldn't get a good enough look to confirm and it did not vocalize. If it wasn't an Acadian, it was REALLY good.

[Maine-birds] House wren Cape Neddick

Cornell Merlin app confirms this little guy is uncommon in these parts. Certainly never had one stay here for over a week. Very vocal scolding even the roosters. Likes to hang out near the veggie garden close to the bracken and aspens and damp vernal pool.

Re: [Maine-birds] Unidentified Night Call

We agree with Dave Cowan's identification of a katydid…our camping experience in August in PA several years ago introduced us to these guys.  When they all get together they are deafening! :)  And yes, they go at it all. night. long.

Katydid, understandably not familiar since it's an insect that I think has been moving in from more southern climes.

[Maine-birds] Western Tanager update

It was last seen in the mixed pine-oak area on the Saco River side of the tracks, unfortunately we had to leave because my dog was getting overheated.  There is a trail that goes down to the river off to the left where more water frontage can be viewed, but along the trail itself is where I usually see the most birds.   Posting from my phone I neglected to mention that it did have a dark back and two light wing bars (which made me think it was a fall Baltimore Oriole at initial glance, although I quickly realized the proportions were wrong, along with the bill).  Very yellow bird with a contrasting orange-pink bill.

There was also some warbler activity there this morning, although it had subsided when we left. There were at least 20 Yellow-rumped in the trees and at 2 Tennessee along with other un-ID'd warblers in the lower vegetation (focusing more on trying to find the Tanager, so had to ignore some of them).   Ingalls Pond is an interesting habitat because the expansive scrub vegetation there is almost entirely buttonbush, with very few cattails growing anywhere.

[Maine-birds] Western Tanager, Ingalls Pond in Baldwin right now

Jeff Webb and I just had a female Western Tanager about 1/4 mile down the path along the railroad tracks.  Tanager sized, slowly moving bird.  Yellow body, dark gray- blackish wings and a pink thick bill.  It was under the canopy at the top of an oak along the path, then flew into the shade of another oak near the Saco River side where we are trying to relocate it.
