[Maine-birds] ACCESS IS RESTRICTED at wastewater treatment plants in NH

It has come to my attention, once again, that birders have been driving
inside and onto the dikes at a wastewater treatment plant in NH.

3 different individuals/groups have been told not to drive on the dikes
at the Exeter WTP recently.  In the past, birders have also been warned
not to drive inside the Rochester WTP.

We are very fortunate to have the ability to bird in these areas. We are
close to being forever banned from birding at these location!!!

YOU MUST FOLLOW THE RULES TO BIRD AT THESE LOCATIONS!  IF YOU DON'T KNOW
THEM, THEN DON'T VISIT!!!!  Please spread this message.

[Maine-birds] A surprise in Bremen

Heading out of my driveway in the car, seeing what looked like a bird in the midst of the grand expanse of my neighbor's snow-covered meadow, I stopped, got out my binoculars for a better view and saw a Flicker earnestly pecking away at the snow making a hole, I presume to get something below.  But the wind was roaring and it was bitter. I hope it found something.

[Maine-birds] Saco feeder

Hello,

we've had evening grosbeaks, on and off visits from bluebirds, and twice a barred owl (even watched her hunt and eat a mouse)
A neighbor (close to us) saw a male rose breasted grosbeak at their feeder.

[Maine-birds] Pelagic Trip to Jeffrey's Ledge - 2/23/19

Jane and I were invited guests on the UNH research vessel "Gulf
Challenger".  We traveled with graduate students who took water samples
at about 5 spots along a prescribed route leading offshore. A Woods Hole
researcher was also aboard and we retrieved their "Slocum Glider", a
whale detecting device which had gone bad east of Jeffrey's Ledge in MA
waters.

https://www.whoi.edu/main/slocum-glider

We traveled through ME, NH, MA, and again in NH waters on return. Sunny
to partly cloudy over the course of the day. Light NW winds sifting to
SW and S during afternoon. Seas mostly 1-2 feet.

The following is a count of birds ONLY IN OFFSHORE WATERS. Past
"influence" of Isles of Shoals. Birds scattered offshore with a big
group of birds (mostly gulls and fulmar) at Wilkinson's stop. Murres
were scattered with some well inside of Jeffrey's on Maine side and an
active area just east of Jeffrey's Ledge. Not many birds on Jeffrey's
Ledge and very few (almost none) birds as we crossed over Old Scantum
area on the way in.

Marine mammals noted include several far offshore (perhaps 4) Harbor
Seals, 1 Gray Seal, a few (perhaps 4) Harbor Porpoise, about 10 dolphin;
presumed Atlantic White-sided.

Separate eBird checklists submitted for each state.  Photos:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/stevemirick/

Species List
-----------------
Common Eider    6 adults MIGRATING NORTH over Jeffrey's Ledge.
DOVEKIE  3  Only 3.  Not sure why so few.  Captain reported large
numbers a few weeks ago in same general area.  211 reported offshore on
12/9/18.
COMMON MURRE    62.  High count.  The default alcid offshore.  Most
photographed.  Mostly groups of 1 to 3 birds.  One large group of 8.
Scattered locations.  Most east of Jeffrey's Ledge.  Most in winter
plumage.  A few in breeding or transitional plumage.
Razorbill    3.  This species continues to be scarce offshore. Decidedly
more common in in-shore waters.
large alcid sp.    10.  Likely Common Murres.
ATLANTIC PUFFIN    4.  Tough views from boat as we whizzed by, but
decent documentation photos.
Black-legged Kittiwake    12.  Not many offshore.
Herring Gull    210.  Huge group of gulls gathered on water at our stop
out on Wilkinson's Basin.  Remarkably few elsewhere.
Iceland Gull    4.  Two adults, 2 first-winter.
Great Black-backed Gull    302.  Huge group of gulls gathered on water
at our stop out on Wilkinson's Basin.  Remarkably few elsewhere.
NORTHERN FULMAR    64.  Most birds east of Jeffrey's Ledge. Especially
among huge group of gulls on stop at Wilkinson's Basin. Mostly light
morphs.
Northern Gannet    8.  Adults.  All east of Jeffrey's Ledge with gulls.

It's fun when you get a Double Talon - when you win twice in a row you get to hold both hands up and flex your fingers like talons.

Sorry, I hit send before realizing it was still not very specific. That is the end of Greely Road Extension on left #490. The feeders are on the right of the house in front of the screen house and are visible from the road. You can pull in the driveway for a closer look if you like. The birds scatter frequently but come back pretty consistently.

Thanks,
Rob O'Connell

End of Greely road extension and it was throughout the day yesterday. There appear to be about 10-15 out there at the moment.

[Maine-birds] Redpoll invasion in Cumberland

So as I pulled into the driveway I saw activity at the feeders which are usually covered with goldfinch but was amazed to see the usual ratio of 20+ goldfinch/5-6 redpolls had reversed. There were 27 redpolls with some shuttling up into the trees so am thinking more in total. None of them hoary, but a good mix of common color variations though. A truck just turned at the end of the road and the scattered but hopefully are still nearby.

Thanks,
Rob O'Connell

[Maine-birds] Kennebunk Birds

Today (2/19), I was surprised by a Turkey Vulture soaring over Kennebunk Highschool and it was seen soaring over the Hope Woods Cemetery later.

On Sunday (2/17), the Hermit Thrush continues at my West Kennebunk home. After a several week long hiatus, he has returned to beneath our bushes in front of our deck.

Other regulars have been observed at feeders such as many chickadees, titmice, both nuthatches, downy and hairy woodpeckers, a female red-bellied woodpecker, and others.

[Maine-birds] Flood Farms

I am taking a young birder out tomorrow and he would like to see snow buntings and horned larks. Where exactly are people seeing these at Flood Farms? i.e. where do you enter the farm or are people viewing the fields from the road?  If I recall correctly people are allowed to view the manure pits (which wouldn't help us with this), but I've never been clear about where the entrance is for those.

If there's another place in Kennebec County or nearby Somerset for these birds, please let me know. (I sometimes have them at my house, but they haven't been around lately.)  And if there are other cool birds we should try to see tomorrow, I'd love to hear that too.

Thanks for any help!

Julia
