Re: [Maine-birds] Need your help regarding Winter Crow roosts in Maine this winter

I don't know where they were heading but a flock of at least 60 crows were flying eastward, towards the coastline, at dusk in Hulls Cove last Monday.

Hello,
This is a frequent crow roost just off I295 Exit 4, which is a southbound only exit. Go past the oil tanks and they roost in the trees bordering and inside the cemetery. It's the far end of Cavalry Cemetery which is accessible from Broadway near Cash Corner in South Portland.
I got these quick pics while parking at the stop sign (43.6356, -70.2903) when no cars were coming. It's a busy area with large tanker trucks and salt trucks when the freighters are unloading so be careful.
Depending on the night I'd estimate there are easily 1,000+ birds there squawking it up. Some nights they are across the street or further back in the cemetery.
Cheers!

Thanks to Glenn and Bob Duchesne about their crow thread in recent days.

As someone who is frequently monitoring a winter crow roost in Lawrence MA which this year is very large and may contain many northern Maine and eastern Canadian American Crows, I would appreciate learning of the status of winter crow roosts in Maine this winter.

Possibly, the two big early snow storms in November and December in 2020 propelled American Crows southward. We counted 25,000 during the Andover CBC count on December 19th. Our previous high was in 2017 at 27,000.

For the 2020 Augusta CBC, did you get a count of American Crows?

What other areas of Maine are seeing winter crow roosts?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Similar behavior in a quail written in a book called That Quail Robert. About a quail that adopted a family in Cape cod.  Charming book.

[Maine-birds] Redwing at Capisic Pond Park, Portland, ME, photos

This morning, Sat Jan 30, Deb and I went to Capisic Pond Park in Portland, ME to see the Redwing.  Very cold, lots of birders, some good photo ops.  Pictures at my usual link:  henrymauer.smugmug.com

We were there from about 7:15 to about 10:15.  We saw the bird off and on, from about 8:00 to 10:15,  Seen often during that time period.

Re: [Maine-birds] REDWING - Portland, 1/30 - Yes

The REDWING put on a great show all day at Capisic Pond. It apparently flew into the park a little after 8AM as large numbers of robins were coming in from the northwest (same direction they were seen heading to roost last night). The Redwing was foraging with the robins for most of the morning but eventually settled into a large multiflora rose bush for the day. There it would sit low, sometimes on the ground, often seen eating snow, for 10-15 minutes at a time, then work towards the top and feed on the fruit, and repeat. I last saw it at 5:10PM, apparently roosting, in the same patch it used for most of the day, here: https://goo.gl/maps/U8uDxPJoXYwt8FKB8

Re: [Maine-birds] REDWING at Capisic Pond Park, Lucas St end

Many thanks to all those who found and shared information about the Redwing at Capissic Pond. I am curious if anyone has determined whether the bird at Capissic belongs to the nominate subspecies Turdus iliacus iliacus, which breeds and winters in Europe, or whether it belongs to the subspecies Turdus iliacus colburni, which breeds in Iceland and winters in Europe, and which is browner above and more darkly spotted below. From my examination of photos that have been posted, I would lean toward the Capissic bird belonging to the nominate subspecies, but I would welcome other people's opinions. Thanks again, Danny Danforth

As a quick update, the REDWING was last seen at 4:30PM when it took off with part of the robin flock, presumably to roost, northwest of the park. A Merlin caused the flock to jump a few times but they seemed to be favoring the multiflora and sumac through the north end of the park.

Since this is likely to draw a crowd, and many will be new to this location, I've put a blog post up on Maine Audubon's website with more details on access and parking at Capisic Pond Park: https://maineaudubon.org/news/rare-bird-alert-redwing/

Great find Brendan and thank you Chris Sayers for coming to get those of us staking out the feeders!

This is the 2nd (!!) Redwing in Maine this month and amazing for a species not previously recorded in the state. One was seen in Steuben by a single observer on private property and not seen again earlier this month. There has recently been a Redwing in New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Re: [Maine-birds] REDWING at Capisic Pond Park, Lucas St end

The bird continues as of 11:30am. A large crowd is assembled just before the small bridge coming from the Capisic St entrance, and the Redwing has been in the dense multiflora rose thicket there for several hours.

Re: [Maine-birds] Need your help regarding Winter Crow roosts in Maine this winter

Hello,
This is a frequent crow roost just off I295 Exit 4, which is a southbound only exit.
Cheers!

[Maine-birds] Re: North Maine Woods

Mike Waters and I spent time in several winter atlas blocs in western Maine near Black Mountain (Peru) yesterday and saw one crow and no ravens.
We saw a handful of blue jays around a feeder.
Meanwhile on Jan 27 around 4:30 pm I stood in the riverfront park in Hallowell and saw at least 1000+ crows on the river ice, with another 1-2000 rising from the trees and settling back down on either side of the riverbank.
The mass of crows on the ice was a new one for me.

Seems like many of the crows from northern Maine could be wintering in the Augusta area. There are hundreds/thousands around that commute daily from a large roost (varying location) to and from the surrounding area. I don't know if anyone has tried to count them this winter but last winter they came to a roost in the Augusta CBC circle on count day and there were about 10,000. Great that you're doing winter atlasing in the north woods, not very many blocks completed up there.

In a fever to survey as many remote blocks as possible before the first half of winter ends for the Maine Bird Atlas project, I hit 6 blocks, finishing 4 in the Allagash area over the last 3 days. This area was crammed with finches last winter, but devoid this winter. A few pine grosbeaks are still around, and I did score 2 redpolls, but no crossbills, siskins or purple finches at all. I pity the biologists who are going to have to decipher what all this means.

Speaking of deciphering…

I walked over 20 miles on plowed logging roads, spending at least a dozen hours in the woods, and did not see a single crow or blue jay. I covered a similar area two weeks ago, and also saw none. It's making me wonder how much the jays and crows move in winter.

I did pile up good numbers of boreal chickadees and Canada jays…and one more black-backed woodpecker, a saucy little female.

Re: [Maine-birds] friendly ruffed grouse...?

Some years ago, we had some friends who lived near Unity.  They showed us "their" Ruffed Grouse, a male which came every day to be fed.  He seemed to be completely unafraid of humans.  I saw it with my own eyes.  I've never been that fortunate.  All we have is Turkeys who have learned not to be too afraid of us as they whack the feeders with their bills to knock seed on the ground.

Next time, take some cracked corn with you.  That bird will be your friend for life. 😁

It was our understanding that ruffed grouse were supposed to be pretty shy but we've had a gregarious one in our back woods this winter. We went sledding back there in early January and were surprised when a grouse came jogging out to meet us, hopped in and out of an empty sled, and generally made itself welcome. It came within two feet of us, and when we resumed sledding, thinking it would run off, it only craned it's neck to watch then started to run alongside the sled as if to race. (I really am not making this up.) It was pretty hilarious to watch and it repeated this behavior three or four times. Unfortunately we did not get good video of that though we took other pictures and videos.

We've been out a couple more times, either sledding, or just tromping when the snow was gone, and each time the grouse has come out to meet us and followed us around until we were out of the thicker woods.

Any thoughts on why this bird might be so tame?

Thanks!

Thanks!
