Re: [Maine-birds] Chuck-will's Widow?

Many, many thanks to the several people who wrote with suggestions and even maps for how to look for CWWI. We'll probably give it a try Saturday evening and will certainly post here with how we do and where we dood it.

Re: [Maine-birds] Chuck-will's Widow?

Hello Charles! We walked into Great Pond Mountain Wildlands looking for Common Nighthawk and Whip-poor-will and had no expectation of finding Chuck-will's-widow. We went in from the South Gate and walked about 2.5 miles up the Valley Road to Mushrall Meadow. We then sat around the campfire ring (no fire) and listened to the birds for about 30 minutes. At 10:00, I picked up the Chuck-will's-widow calling fairly close. Good luck!

[Maine-birds] Chuck-will's Widow?

We had success in June 2018, parking at the north gated access point for Valley Rd (see link to list) where you can park a couple of cars, at 8 pm and walking 1.5 miles down the gravel road to the spot everyone was hearing it that year. It started calling at about 8:45 pm and sang regularly. Not sure if it's been in the same spot last year and this. It's certainly easy to hear if it's there, we could hear it at least 1/4 mile away on the way out. Good luck!

[Maine-birds] Virginia Rail

June 28 - I drive around on old roads, often dirt,  just for entertainment and often stop for wetlands and old cemeteries. Tonight I had just stopped at a wetland on the Chamberlain Meetinghouse Road in Corinna and was ready to get out of the car when I saw 2 juvenile Virginia Rail on the edge of the road. On the Bond Road, also in Corinna, there were several Cowbirds keeping company with a horse.

Re: [Maine-birds] ID help needed

I agree with Tony. We had our usual yearly visit from a clearwing here a few days back.
Remember this beautiful creature when you find hornworms in the garden. For this and the other hawkmoths are what they will turn into!
I enjoy having them around just as much as hummingbirds.

Steve

Ours was a Diervilla Clearwing (Hemaris aethra)

[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights, 6/20-26

Hi all,
With the exception of the mystery blackbird, it was a rather slow week of birding for me - save for all of the fun summer breeding species. My observations of note were limited to:
- 1 continuing adult WHITE-FACED IBIS, Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 6/23.
- 2+ Red Crossbills, Gray Doggie Cottage, 6/26.
- 1 Red Crossbill, our yard in Pownal, 6/26.

[Maine-birds] Maine Bird Atlas - Weekly Challenges, 6/26

Hi everyone:

Last week's results:
An impressive 54 confirmed Chipping Sparrow records were submitted, adding 17 new confirmed blocks to their map. Only a few people submitted the Priority Blocks they surveyed but there were 13 Priority Blocks completed this week, so we're making progress! Keep it up, this is peak-atlasing time! And better luck with Wood Thrushes this week as 3 new blocks got confirmed records. Congratulations to Daniel in Franklin, Glen from Hallowell, and Logan in Palermo for being chosen by Excel's random number generator as winners this week!

Here are the challenges for this week:

1) Yellow Warbler - confirmed records from most of our warblers have been increasing over the past week as nest building wraps up and carrying food increases. Recently fledged records are coming in for early nesters too, so watch your local warblers! Yellow Warbler can be our 'target' for confirming this week.

2) Priority Block Challenge - Repeating this from last week because this is our priority ;) for the project: We really need volunteers spending time competing Priority Blocks. Take a look at the Atlas Effort Map (https://ebird.org/atlasme/effortmap), find a priority block, go atlasing a morning or two this week, revisit 7+ days later to easily bump possible to probable records, and you're making great progress to completing the block! To track this challenge, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/tobv2xBvW82N3BAW9

3) Yellow-throated Vireo - Sorry for the southern bias on these tougher challenges, but like our last two weeks, Yellow-throated Vireo stands out as a species that just needs more effort. They've only been confirmed in 3 blocks so far, so use the eBird sightings map for inspiration of new blocks to look in: https://ebird.org/map/yetvir?neg=true&env.minX=-72.46657137102935&env.minY=42.931742964051736&env.maxX=-66.41310457415435&env.maxY=45.25115647639824&zh=true&gp=true&ev=Z&mr=6-7&bmo=6&emo=7&yr=all&byr=1900&eyr=2020 (I won't count any records from Brownfield Bog for this challenge, we know they're there…)

Good birding and happy atlasing!

No, it wouldn't be from this year. And of course, I could be wrong. I was once before. 😉😁

[Maine-birds] Scoters off Trundy Point, Cape Elizabeth, 6/24/20

This post is mostly for visiting birders who don't get to see scoters regularly (like myself-scoters are extremely rare in central Texas at any season). Today there were two White-winged Scoters and one Black Scoter off Trundy Point in Cape Elizabeth. Checklist with poor
but identifiable photos at:

[Maine-birds] SEDGE WREN - Searsport (Private Property), 6/22-24

On Monday (22 June), Charlie Todd found an apparent pair of SEDGE WRENS while surveying private property in Searsport (Waldo County). The male was very vocal each day since, and often sings from solitary saplings in its sedge-grass territory.

Access to this site has a few challenges so please read the following recommendations and strongly consider your personal feasibility of access before chasing this bird. As stated above, this site is a large parcel of private property, though it is not posted. Charlie was there providing technical assistance for an owner wanting to evaluate grassland bird activity before conversion of his field. Keep in mind that this location is being shared as having implied access, so be respectful, minimize your impact, and leave the place the way you found it.

With legal access the priority, you should also know the physical access is difficult as well. First, you need a vehicle with decent clearance as the place to park is about 500 feet down a rutted path that I really hesitate to call a road. At this 500 foot mark, you'll see a clearing where trees have been harvested and a couple vehicles could park. This dirt drive access is located on the west side of Turnpike Road, about 0.4 miles north from Route 1 (across from the private Amy Lois Lane). I don't think any cars should attempt parking on Turnpike Road as the road is narrow, banks are steep, and you'd be in another person's yard. Driving a vehicle with clearance (hint: a Prius wouldn't make it) or even walking the 0.75 miles up from parking along Sears Island Road, appear to be the best options to access this spot. From this harvested opening in the woods, follow the dirt ruts a little over 0.3 miles into the clearing and you'll be on the Sedge Wren territory. When you find the wet spot in the road, you'll know you're there (and probably have heard the bird by then).

Also note that Sedge Wrens are listed as endangered breeders in Maine and have not been confirmed in the state since 2000 (at Penjajawoc Marsh in Bangor). Even as migrants this species is very rare in the state, so please don't do anything to compromise the potential nesting of this apparent pair. There is no need to use playback or try flushing the bird. You should be successful in finding the bird by staying along the path and listening for the vocal male. It frequently vocalizes from the grass and often perches from a few small saplings, so patience will reward you with views. I do want to encourage everyone to keep an eye (or ear) out for Sedge Wrens around the state. There are hundreds of similar settings and special attention to the wet areas of fields may produce more of these secretive birds, and hopefully in an easier to access location.

Good birding,

[Maine-birds] Whippoorwill magic, Industry

Anyone who needs a whippoorwill fix should spend a night at the Blueberry Fields Bed and Breakfast in the town of Washington. For the two nights we have been here we have been serenaded at 9 pm and 4 am. The bird starts in the front yard just off the big front porch before making his round of the fields. Tonight I will try to see him. Apparently this bird or his ancestors have been singing here almost every June night for 7 or 8 years. Blueberryfieldsbandb.com - stay in the Bryant Pond room.
