[Maine-birds] Crazy numbers of Caspian Terns

Not sure if it constitutes a fall out, but some combination of wind, weather and migration made for a very unusual April afternoon along the Seacoast with Caspian Terns roosting on beaches in big numbers in NH and York County. I personally saw 6 at Ogunquit Beach (found by David Nelson), 9 at Hills Beach, and one at Parsons Beach in Kennebunk (found by Chris Duffy), and it looks like there were more in Biddeford Pool at Hattie's, and undoubtedly elsewhere. There were also a number of reports in NH including 11 at Rye Harbor. Its worth checking large gull aggregation points tomorrow for more. I'd be shocked if there weren't a few at Pine Point right now. A fun afternoon out, despite the crap weather.

Predictions:
I wish I hadn't looked ahead at this weeks forecast, but focusing on tomorrow, we might get some counting in. Rain should be tapering off in the morning and some of the sky cover should be following suit. Winds will likely be strong but from a more favorable direction for migration as the winds are predicted to switch from SE early in the day to SW for most of the count period. I'm hoping this is a big enough hole in the rain for birds to be moving out.

42 People stopped by today, 20 of whom were here for the Feathers Over Freeport hawkwatch workshop which Derek presented. It was an attentive crowd which was rewarded with a great little mix of raptor species passing by the summit. Local BW's made multiple passes along with a close Eagle. It was on of the first times I remember getting a Merlin going passed during the presentation. Thanks to everyone who stuck around to help scan the empty sky.

Weather:
We started the day with a little sun for an hour or so before the clouds set in for good. Temps felt cool but in the 50's, likely from a little wind chill as we had more E and SE breezes coming off the ocean. Visibility was good.

Raptor Observations:
Another slow day in the end. The morning had most of the migrants before the winds picked up. Local birds were active during the morning but once the afternoon breeze came up the flights really died down including the locals. Hawkwatch Junco spotted a fast flying Merlin for us in the afternoon as it shot over the summit.

Non-raptor Observations:
31 species were seen or heard today. Northbound birds were few today. I guess everything decided to wait for the wet weather to pass instead of trying to get out ahead of it. northbound birds include: 26 Double-crested Cormorants. 6 Yellow-rumped Warblers 2 Red-winged Blackbirds.

Predictions:
Wet and wild.

Visitors:
15 people stopped by the site today. We had a lot of good help up there today. Sorry not everyone fit on the official counter list including: Jesse Costa, Dick and Jen Baker. Thanks everyone for helping scan the Blue Screen of Death

Weather:
Temps climbed just into the 60's and skies were blue with just a peppering of clouds. Winds started out light and from the SSE but picked up in the afternoon and bringing some cooler ocean air. Visibility was pretty good but conditions were tough for spotting with so few clouds.

Raptor Observations:
Birds were scattered around the sky today with no real kettles or flight-lines to speak of. It was a pretty even distribution of birds over the coarse of the day. We had a few nice views of Merlins which stopped to climb in some small thermals before resuming their typical Bullet-train like flight to the north.

Non-raptor Observations:
Not much of a passerine flight this morning with the exception of a number of Yellow-rumped Warblers; 21 to be exact. We did have some new species finally make it to the summit, including a couple of Chipping Sparrows and Barn Swallows. 27 species were seen or heard today.

Predictions:
Tomorrow, for the Feathers Over Freeport event things could be interesting and I'm not quite sure what to expect. The winds don't look great, coming from the SE, but given the time of year and not having seen a lot moving through, along with some heavy rains beginning later in the day potentially pushing birds north we may or may not have a bunch of birds moving. Do birds fight the winds and avoid the rain or do they snuggle up to a tree trunk? Temps will be in the upper 40's

Weather:
Today was nice overall with temps reaching into the 50's once the morning clouds moved out. The summit was sprayed with a little passing shower around 3pm EDT, just missing the heavy soaking which landed slightly to our S. Winds were mostly very light and coming from the SSE. Visibility was very good but diminished slightly due to heat shimmer once the sun came out.

Raptor Observations:
Another good flight on southerly winds today. Birds were on the move right out of the gate this morning. It was a couple hours before birds really hit their stride with triple digit hour totals. Many birds were counted far to our SE only as a result of the good visibility. Some birds were coming over the mountain and even to our NW. Not many birds were spotted in the middle distance in front of us today. Many birds, especially this morning, were moving in an E heading which seemed a bit odd given the winds were pushing inland. In my time on the mountain southerly winds often push birds closer to us and inland and today birds seemed to be flying right towards the coast. There was a good variety of species today along with more Eagles which seemed to be moving with purpose. One Eagle had interesting plumage on the underwing which looked like two equals signs running from leading to trailing edge of the wing. After the rain the BW flight quieted down but Sharp-shinned continued on.

Non-raptor Observations:
We had our first-of-season Blue-headed Vireo start to sing briefly today which seemed about right for this time. We were able to tally 32 species for the day list. Northbound birds seemed more plentiful with many warblers and finch but I was seeing them peripherally while identifying raptors. Northbound migrants include: 177 Double-crested Cormorants 52 Tree Swallows 33 Red-winged Blackbirds 15 Purple Finches 8 Brown-headed Cowbirds 7 Common Grackles 5 Common Loons 1 Eastern Bluebird 1 American Goldfinch 1 Great Blue Heron

Predictions:
Tomorrow should have abundant sunshine and warmer temps in the 50's. Winds don't look all that promising but there are still plenty of birds which need to get N. Winds may start out from the N and slowly move clockwise throughout the day before hitting SSE by day's end.

7 people stopped by Make-Out Point today.

Weather:
We were finally back on the mountain to count after the rain and fog. Visibility was fantastic all day long. A very low cloud ceiling filled the sky during the day with some brightening occurring in the afternoon, to our W and a little to the SE. The air was a little damp and a bit chilly, with temps in the low 40's. Winds were almost nonexistent at the summit with a breath of air from the SSE.

Raptor Observations:
The day started pretty darn slow for the first three hours with just two migrants. No good thermals or flight-lines developed today and birds seemed to appear out of thin air. While watching a relatively close Broad-wing through my scope, waiting for it to start gliding north, five more BW's suddenly appeared around it. Like rising bubbles in a murky swamp, one by one each bird popped out of the cloud layer. Other birds suddenly appeared in a small kettle over the summit too, leaving us clueless as to where they had just come from. Many birds were counted well to our SE today and I feel there was likely more migration taking place than we could detect.

Non-raptor Observations:
Still waiting on some more first-of-season birds to arrive. The surrounding woods were pretty quiet. The bird of the day was Double-crested Cormorants. A total of roughly 1,366 Cormorants were counted heading north along with: 6 Great Blue Herons 7 Yellow-rumped Warblers 5 Purple Finches 1 Tree Swallow

Predictions:
Maybe we'll get a few Falcons with tomorrows southerly breeze. The morning hours could have us and the birds contending with some showers but the afternoon looks to be a little brighter with some sun and temps in the upper 40's to 50. I would suspect tomorrow to be decent if the rains aren't too bad.

Re: [Maine-birds] Re: Double-crested Cormorant---big movement today?

Nowhere near your numbers, Charles, but on Tuesday night around 7 p.m. in Orono, I observed a flock of about 400 double-crested cormorants in a single huge V-formation, winging their way northward following the Penobscot River.  Right behind them was a flock of about 50 scoter sp. in a more ragged V-formation.

[Maine-birds] 30 Piping plovers at Seawall Beach

This morning at Seawall Beach at Morse Mt. Mark Rolerson and I found a flock of 30 Piping Plovers on the outer beach. There was also a pair of Piping Plovers getting ready to nest toward the East end of the beach. On the rocks off the beach were a small flock of Purple Sandpipers.

I saw several hundred in a few loose flocks flying northward above the Fore River, Portland, about 7:15 this morning.  When I got to Grondin Pond in SoPo, there were 1,000 +/- there in a dense, long string on the water.  And as I was leaving perhaps another 500 dropped in from the northwest.

The only comparable numbers in Vickery (2020) are "2,500 flying north off Biddeford, 28 Apr 1985 (P. Cross)" and "~1,000 at Sewall Beach, 2 May 1993 (PDV, eBird)."

[Maine-birds] Kennebunk Beaches

At the Kennebunk beaches around 3 PM, we saw a merlin and a kestrel separately on high evergreens, one American pipit, and three savannah sparrows. The latter species had bright yellow supercillia. There were two flocks of over 70 double-crested cormorants and 25 long-tailed ducks.

Weather:
It was a raw wet spring day today. The heaviest showers passed through this morning, but intermittent light rain, mist and drizzle hung on for most of the day. Each thought of heading up the mountain was met rather quickly with a deterioration in weather conditions.

Raptor Observations:

Non-raptor Observations:

Predictions:
We shouldn't be contending with rain tomorrow, but it will still be overcast to mostly cloudy with winds stubbornly easterly. A northeast wind is supposed to shift to southeast by the afternoon, so we shall see. Birds will need to move after 2 days of stalled migration.

Poor weather conditions kept me off the mountain today. Visibility was limited along with persistent rain and mist.

Predictions:
The first half of this week looks like we may miss some counting hours as a low pressure system remains over the region. Tomorrow morning we may be plagued by fog. Light rain is likely to start the day, with showers possible in the afternoon. Winds are predicted to be from the ENE and temps will remain cool and in the low 40's. It seems like a bit of a toss-up as to whether we'll get in some counting.

Visitors:
19 visitors today. The park was relatively quiet.

Weather:
Wind was howling all day from the E and SE. Clouds filled the sky with the exception of a small clearing to the E first thing this am. Temps were chilly and in the mid to high 40's. Visibility was very good all day long.

Raptor Observations:
We may have set the record for fewest birds counted on a full dry day in April. Not the records were looking to break but a small victory of sorts if were trying to stay positive. It was almost laughable at how few birds were in the skies today. We got a nice showing of a couple Eagles but that was over in a minute or two. Not even Red-tails were seen kiting in the wind.

Non-raptor Observations:
Quiet all around. I did managed to find 24 species for the day. Northbound birds include: 40 Double-crested Cormorants 3 Canada Geese 1 Purple Finch

Predictions:
Tomorrow looks like a repeat of today but this time I think the rain will have finally arrived. Strong winds from the E and temps in the 40's again. It's looking kind of like a complete wash at this point.
