Re: [Maine-birds] red tail hawk question

Yes, that's a good sign of age. That hawk probably hatched in 2017. Now that it's passed its 2nd birthday (in its third calendar year), it will get its red tail starting with the central feathers. Good eye!

[Maine-birds] Brunswick Scissor-tailed Flycatcher

I've had a few people email about directions to the STFC that Magill Weber posted an update about earlier today. Tempus Jets is at Brunswick Executive Airport. The entrance to the parking lot is a the corner of Pegasus Street and Katahdin Drive and the bird was actively flycatching  (and calling) along the fence at the back of the large parking lot (and in front of the solar panels and rock pile as Magill noted). If you google Tempus Jets, Brunswick, the location should come up on google maps. I talked to one of the Tempus employees and he thought it was cool the bird was there.

[Maine-birds] EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE continues, Monhegan

Donna Cundy had told me that the big dove was still hanging around out here, calling every morning, and sure enough, I heard it this morning for about an hour and got a glimpse at one point. It seems to be very faithful to the area between the Trailing Yew and the brewery.

Some other birds I noted here today include Brown Thrasher, Swainson's Thrush, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Winter Wren, Black-throated Green Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Am. Redstart, Common Yellowthroat, and Cedar Waxwings. Saw Common Eiders with chicks in the surf below Black Head. I also heard a Merlin yelling at one point today, while on trail #14 from Pebble Beach.

[Maine-birds] Additional Highlights This Week, 6/24-28

Hi all,
My post-WINGS-tour observations of note over the past five days included:
- Glossy Ibis have been regular in the saturated farm fields (and even front yards!) from the Greater Yarmouth Goose Fields through Pownal and Durham and into Brunswick. This is a regular occurrence in spring, but relatively rare in mid-breeding season and I do not recall so many in such a widespread area at this season. Still looking for the White-faced Ibis among them.
- 1 singing male Blackpoll Warbler, Peak's Island, 6/24 (with Jeannette).
- 1 breeding-plumaged drake Long-tailed Duck, Peak's Island, 6/24 (with Jeannette).
- 1 drake LESSER SCAUP with 3 drake GREATER SCAUP, Wharton Point, Brunswick, 6/27.
- 27 Black Scoters, Simpson's Point, Brunswick, 6/27.

[Maine-birds] Bird walks near Augusta/Waterville week of July 7-13.

Hello from California!

I'll be staying with friends in North Belgrade, between Waterville and Augusta, the week of July 7-13, and am looking forward to seeing some east coast birds. Before I strike out on my own, I was wondering if anyone here knows of any scheduled bird walks or field trips anywhere near there during that week. Thanks!

Yesterday I heard a thump on the front deck, went out to discover a blue jay picking moths off the front door (The hickory tussocks are having a good year).  Usually this is a phoebe hobby, but I guess I will be rescuing the more charismatic moths from the birds in the morning.  This morning I was outside when I heard the cries of the local Goshawks that nest nearby.  Looked around, no raptors but probably same jay imitating Goshawk cry.

[Maine-birds] NC Birder coming to Maine looking for GRCO and Crossbills

Hello there folks ! Long time birder here coming to Maine next week for some vacation. I've been looking for a Great Cormorant on all my trips to the East Coast over the last few years and have always struck out.

Does anyone know of a reliable spot to see a GRCO that is not on a whale-watching boat but also anything near or south of Bar Harbor? I see eBirds but you never really know how reliable the spots are.

I am also looking for either species of Crossbill and understand Baxter SP may be a good spot, but that is a huge place to search from and would value any local knowledge of best places to possibly spot one.

Thanks in advance for your help!

We still have a few spaces left for experienced birders to help out with a block-busting party for the Maine Breeding Bird Survey this weekend. If birding largely undeveloped areas around Holeb Twp., Attean Pond, Stony Brook, and Heald Pond floats your boat, we could use your help!  Base of operations is a well-equipped seasonal camp on Crocker Pond, west of Jackman.  We'll be there from Thursday mid-day through Monday afternoon, but it's OK if you want to come for a shorter period within that window.  Most of our daylight hours will be devoted to completing priority blocks for the survey, but we will come together each evening for a group supper and stories before an early bedtime. If this sounds like your idea of fun in the Maine woods, please contact me offline. Thanks!

[Maine-birds] WINGS tour report: 8 birding days,158 species.

Hi all,
I just completed my biennial, 10-day comprehensive Maine-New Hampshire tour for WINGS Birding Tours Worldwide.  All but 24 hours of the 8 (very) full days of birding are in Maine.  This year, the trip finished with 158 (average ~160) species, but we missed almost nothing of significance to the group members. 1300+ miles round trip from Portland, from Mt. Washington to Machias, and almost every habitat in between.

- 23 species of warblers, including Mourning, Bay-breasted, and Louisiana Waterthrush (no Cape May; did not go for Blue-winged).
- 13 species of sparrow, 7 species of thrushes (Bicknell's in NH only); 6 species of flycatchers (low); 5 species of terns; 5 species of vireo (Philadelphia Vireo only in NH); 4 species of alcids,
- Black-backed Woodpecker, Spruce Grouse, Canada Jay, Boreal Chickadee (NH only), etc. Olive-sided Flycatcher was our only boreal "miss"on the itinerary.
- only tubenose on a whale watch out of Bar Harbor was Wilson's Storm-Petrel (30+).

- unexpected/out of place/rarities:
1 1st summer Common Merganser, Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 6/15.
1 LITTLE EGRET, Tidewater Preserve Falmouth, then followed to Providence Avenue, Falmouth. 6/15.
3 immature GREAT CORMORANTS, Quoddy State Park, Lubec, 6/19.
1 1st summer male Black Scoter, Quoddy State Park, 6/19.
2 fly-over RED CROSSBILLS, Moosehorn NWR - Edmunds Division, 6/20.
1 immature GREAT CORMORANT, Sand Beach, Acadia National Park, 6/21.

And lots of lobster was consumed.

On Hermit Island's Bounty Cove. Canon 24-105mm with hand made label. Looks like it might have been there over the winter? But is still in excellent shape. Let me know; can send.

[Maine-birds] Edwin L. Smith Preserve report (6/20)...

Hi all,

This morning, I spent 5 hours birding 6 miles of trails at the
Kennebunkport Conservation Trust's Edwin L. Smith Preserve (trailhead
located on Guinea Road just north of the junction with Goose Rocks
Road).

Mosquitoes were biting, so I wore a headnet throughout, which
certainly made it more difficult to see birds, but no harder to hear
them, at least before rain filled in between 10 and 11am. Among the
singers were a variety of warblers...

30 OVENBIRD
10 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER
8 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT
7 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER
5 PINE WARBLER
3 CANADA WARBLER
3 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER
1 NASHVILLE WARBLER
1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER

... and many other birds. I've added 9 audio recordings to my eBird
checklist, so you can get a sense of who I heard.

https://ebird.org/atlasme/view/checklist/S57536010

And as a bonus, back at the trailhead, I scanned the field across the
street and noticed a CLIFF SWALLOW, along with a pair of BARN SWALLOWS
and some BOBOLINK. I imagine that if the rain had held off until noon,
I'd probably have added several species to my list. Perhaps you can
observe some I missed when you go to check it out.

Despite living just a few minutes from the trailhead for more than 5
years, today was the first time I've explored the trails east of
markers #6 and #15 (the loop formed by the Steele Trail and Bobcat
Ridge), though I expect I'll return for another walk before long.
[Note: For a shorter visit, I recommend the Brook Trail loop.]

If you're interested in birding this large, well-maintained preserve,
be advised that the trails are popular with mountain bikers, so you
might prefer to arrive early and on a week day. This may also afford
you a place to park, as the small parking area is often filled to
capacity later in the day.

For more info and to see a map of the preserve, visit
http://www.kporttrust.org/edwin-l-smith-preserve.

Wildly,
Josh

[Maine-birds] Re: Chuck-will’s-widow

Not too far away in Holden our resident Cat Bird has been imitating the Chuck-will's-widow song as part of its repertoire.

Sorry-the Wildlands are in Orland. The north entrance is on Bald Mountain Road. It's about a mile walk to where I heard the first bird.

[Maine-birds] Feather and calls

Garrett,

The calls you recorded do suggest a young bird begging to be fed.  However, I once followed two young Barred Owls around our neighborhood (I live in a rural town) and their calls were more like hisses.  This doesn't mean Barred Owls of this age don't have other calls, but just indicating what I heard this one time.

Also, I think the feather you found is more likely that of a hawk.  I have a similar feather and believe it is from a Red-shouldered Hawk.  Wing feathers of the Barred Owl seem to have white tips and the barring is more regular and perhaps narrower as well, without the rather broad black terminal band.  See here:

Red-shouldered Hawk feathers:

Here again, there is variation in everything wild, and I could be mistaken.  Did want to pass along these comments, however.

Cheers,
bab

[Maine-birds] Call Identification Help

Could anyone help me identify the bird call from this recording? I recorded it on June 16th, at 11:30 PM. It continued off and on through about 1:15 AM when I went to bed. My initial thought was possibly barred owl fledgling calls, but I am unsure. Today I found a feather which I also believe is a barred owl feather, but again I am not positive. This would back up my earlier belief. I would love to hear any ideas.

Re: [Maine-birds] Virginia Rail family - similar experience w/ Snipe(?)

This a.m. on Rte 302 on Raymond/Windham line.  I was a couple of cars back when I noticed the car coming from opposite direction stopping.  First thought was a duck w/ brood but definitely wasn't.  Wasn't able to get the best of looks.  She had lots of chicks.  Everyone made scurried across safely & quickly.  This is a woody area  - though there is water around - so I was thinking Snipe.
Any thoughts?

Glad the Wood Thrushes are in Holden-for the first time in 20 years I have not had any around my home in West Kennebunk. One or two stopped during migration but none stayed; I do miss their evening /dawn melodies! Even the Veerys are quiet/not present this year.  Sharon in West K.

This morning we heard a Swainson's Thrush near ANP Carriage Road intersection #25, a place we have reliably heard them in past years.

In Holden we have Hermit Thrushes every year and a decade ago Wood Thrushes were here most years as well.  After several year's absence, we have heard Wood Thrushes several times off Nickerson Road.  Nice to have them back in the neighborhood.

[Maine-birds] Backyard birding in Maine is... wow!

I relocated to Maine this month, from Chicago, after visiting an old friend in North Yarmouth for many years. One of the many lures was the action at her feeders. She's got an old farmhouse, fields and forest surround, sparrows in the barn, usual right? But she gets such great stuff routinely at her feeders! In two recent afternoons at her place I saw the following just off her back porch (plus a bunch of sparrows, doves, variety of blackbirds, etc.)...

- Downy and hairy peckers.
- Red breasted nuthatch
- White breasted nuthatch
- 2 pileated woodpeckers
- Cardinals
- Baltimore orioles
- Bluebirds
- Scarlet tanager
- Brown creeper
- Rose breasted grosbeak
- tufted titmouse
- Blue jays
- Chickadees
- Goldfinches

And last month I saw a bald eagle kill and eat (with a second eagle) a wild turkey in her yard. And later a turkey vulture cleaned up. I mean... pileated woodpeckers at a feeder?!! On any outing in the Chicago area I would be happy to have seen a few of those species, and one pileated every five years if lucky, but all of them in a couple afternoons? Back home, we would get excited each spring when an ovenbird returned to our suburban yard. For me, this is remarkable backyard birding.

[Maine-birds] Glossy Ibis

Fairly large flock of glossy ibis yesterday afternoon (60+) in a muddy cow pasture on Rt 9 (Hallowell Rd), just south of Loring Ln. north of Royal Rd. in Pownal. I'm a recent midwest transplant, been here just two weeks and have only done backyard birding in Maine, so I was a little startled, having seen them only tropically in the past. (I see the earlier post below.) The neighbor whose drive I pulled-off on says they've been feeding in that pasture a couple days. Nobody knew what they were; the farmer called them "mud shits!" After a while they flew off to the east, and when I re-checked just before dusk the cows had moved in.

[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights, 6/8-14

Hi all,

My observations of note over the past seven days included the following:
- 6+ Gray Jays, 1 Olive-sided Flycatcher, etc, Boy Scout Road, Rangeley, 6/8 (with Rangeley Birding Festival tour group).
- 1 RUSTY BLACKBIRD, 1 Blackpoll Warbler (migrant?), etc, Boy Scout Road, Rangeley, 6/9 (with Rangeley Birding Festival tour group).
- 7 Upland Sandpipers, 7 Grasshopper Sparrows, 11 Vesper Sparrows, etc, Kennebunk Plains, Kennebunk, 6/10 (with Jeannette).
- 1 continuing male BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, Smutty Lane, Saco, 6/10 (with Jeannette).
- 1 continuing LITTLE EGRET, Providence Ave, Falmouth and then relocating to Tidewater Farm, Falmouth, 6/10 (with Jeannette).
- 1 continuing HYBRID TRICOLORED HERON X SMALL WHITE EGRET(S), Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 6/14.  At this point, I think it's lineage is impossible to determine, but I wonder about Tricolored Heron x Snowy Egret x Little Egret at this point based on plumage, timeline, plumage progression, etc.  Whatever...I just call it Patches II now.
- 1 Greater Yellowlegs, Eastern Road Trail, 6/14.
- 1 female PURPLE MARTIN, Dunstan Landing, Scarborough Marsh, 6/14.

-Derek

[Maine-birds] Katahdin Woods & Waters, pictures, displaying male Spruce Grouse

In early June Deb and I joined a group from the Acadia Birding Festival for a two day trip to Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument.  It is a wonderful spot.  Pics at my usual link:  henrymauer.smugmug.com    Click on 2019 albums and then on the KW&W thumbnail.

We had a wonderful show put on by a displaying male Spruce Grouse, numerous moose, and some other nice birds as well.

Lately I've been hearing a bird at night that I never heard before.  Sometimes this song will go on what seems like 10 minutes of the time Sith a short pause then start back up. Link to recording:

[Maine-birds] BBS Block-busting weekend - JACKMAN!

I'm looking for a few experienced birders with a sense of adventure to help me knock off a priority block or two for the Maine Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) in remote areas around Jackman.  A Jackman summer resident has offered us the use of his camp on Crocker Pond, with beds (singles and pull-out sofas) to sleep six and floor space for up to four more.  He has also offered his canoes and kayak to allow us to explore regions with no road access.  (Please bring your own paddle and life jacket, if you are a skilled paddler who would enjoy birding via lakes and streams as well as on land.) Arrive after noon on Thursday, June 27 to get settled into the camp and plot your route. Early arrivers can start right in exploring the selected priority block on Thursday afternoon if they wish. Friday through Sunday, June 28-30, our days will start very early as we head out, either in groups of two or as individuals, to look for evidence of breeding birds in all of the different habitats within priority blocks in the Jackman grid.  All meals and snacks will be provided.  On Monday, July 1, we will pack up to return home – possibly with one last birding foray on the way, if time permits.  If you can only come for part of the scheduled four-day time window, that's OK too – every hour of birding counts toward our goal. Interested birders can contact me offline for more details.  Thanks!

Spotted two adult Little Blue Herons, possibly nesting, over the weekend in the salt marsh off the Bridle Trail in Kennebunk, near the mouth of the Mousam River.
