[Maine-birds] Buff breasted no

Just checked Wainwright for the Buff Breasted Sandpiper. Didn't locate. They are mowing several fields so that probably doesn't help.

Re: [Maine-birds] Regarding changes to Google Groups

Hi all,
Also, since the new UI, for some reason, the birding.aba.org page doesn't display every message. This is true for many - if not all - states, it appears. Sialia.com, however, does display those "missing" messages.

I certainly can't explain it, but I have gotten into the habit of using Sialia over the ABA site for archives of recent posts from other states.

[Maine-birds] Thank you, Doug

I appreciate your thorough explanation and am hoping this commo message will prove the work around. Since I suspect a large number of birders use a mobile phone almost exclusively one wonders why Google is making this change.

[Maine-birds] Regarding changes to Google Groups

Hi everyone:

As a few people have asked about here, I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of recent changes to Google Groups and how it my impact your use of Maine birds.

Google began rolling out a new user interface (UI) for Google Groups in May 2020, but admins were allowed to defer the change. That worked until 15 September when the new UI became the default for web browsers on non-mobile devices (you can still change back to the classic UI by clicking on the Settings gear in the top right of your browser window) and the only option for mobile devices. Unfortunately this new UI does not allow new posts, or "conversations" as Google calls them, to be started from a mobile device, which is apparently the problem that has been shared here previously.

A solution for anyone who had been posting by accessing the group through your mobile device's web browser is to post via the email associated with your Maine birds Google Group membership (the email that you receive posts to). Using that account, you can address an email to maine-birds@googlegroups.com and it will be posted and distributed as usual.

You can always check or edit the email you have associated with your Maine birds Google Group membership by visiting: https://groups.google.com/u/1/g/maine-birds/membership

Although I haven't tested this, it appears you can still post on a mobile device's web browser by using the reply-all button on an existing post. In this not-so-thoroughly tested new UI the reply-all button might not be visible on a mobile device's vertical (portrait) viewport and cannot be swiped (scrolled) or pinched (zoomed) to see, but changing to a horizontal (landscape) orientation makes that button visible. Beware that this will be posted as a reply and therefore might cause valuable information to be buried. I don't recommend this option, but if it your only way of getting word of a rare bird out, please use it.

Hopefully we will see improvements to this new Google Groups UI rather than more deprecation of useful features.

And since I'm sure everyone is still reading this, I wanted to encourage members not to post photos (or any other media) directly to this group. Media greatly increases the size of these messages which can be troublesome for users with limited data plans or low bandwidth internet. There are several syndication sites that pull posts from state listservs (such as birding.aba.org or digest.sialia.com) but do not include media, often making those posts useless. As an alternative, please use media hosting sites like eBird.org (which hosts photos and audio through the Macaulay Library), flickr.com, etc, and then add those links in your messages. It also helps to post the full link, rather than using hyperlinked text, to preserve what you are trying to share.

Thank you all for your cooperation, participation, and civility on Maine birds,

[Maine-birds] Flat Bay, Harrington, shore bird recap

The past two weeks brought in the bulk of the Semipalmated Sandpiper migration that uses Flat Bay. Our highest count was 4,000 of them scattered along the water's edge for about a mile's distance south to north. There were hundreds of Semipalmated Plover, Black-bellied Plover and scattering of Least Sandpipers and Short-billed Dowitchers. We didn't get up to the northern part of the bay at "last mud" very often. That is the place to get the surprise shorebirds.

The highest Whimbrel count was 55 on August 10. This is distressing as last year we observed 122 Whimbrel on August 6. Of course we could have missed a large flock as we were not home for a few days in early August. It's just something we will have to keep close watch on. I am hoping they have found another place to feed rather than their numbers are plunging so badly.

Shorebird numbers are decreasing now as migration grinds on....

Re: [Maine-birds] Re: swallows

Aletha,

The video worked well for me. Pretty cool.  I could see the large number, but I could not see them close up with detail.  I assume they were barn swallows because of their speed and the quick change in direction.  I had a number (~50) of barn swallow here in Benton the last two weeks.  I still have a few barn swallows nesting here right now.  This is very unusual.  They are usually gone by now.

[Maine-birds] Beal’s Island Morning Flight, 8/28

Hi all,

On vacation for the week here in Washington County, I finally had the chance to check out the morning flight at the bridge between Beal's Island and the Jonesport mainland this morning. I was stationed in the south end, on Beal's, but bridge construction has eliminated most of the adjacent vegetation save for a few isolated spruces. With near-calm conditions, few birds were landing, and those that did were in tall spruces about 100 yards to the west- too far to identify most species. Otherwise, birds were usually quite high, and construction noise (especially when the jackhammer started) impacted my ability to sort through flight calls.

Therefore, I counted warblers on a clicker and mostly estimated abundance. The volume of Red-breasted Nuthatches, however, was quite significant and is further evidence of a major irruption underway - which usually portends a good "winter finch" season.

5:50-8:30am

42F, clear, calm to vy lt NW to vy lt SW

-527 warblers of 9 species. Approximately 60-70% American Redstarts and 10-20% Northern Parulas. (Other species in very rough order of abundance: Yellow-rumped, Yellow, Magnolia, Black-throated Green, Cape May, Black-throated Blue,

  • Non-warblers:

84 Cedar Waxwings

73 Red-breasted Nuthatches**

8 Tree Swallows

5 Purple Finches

4 Eastern Kingbirds

2 Common Loons

2 American Goldfinches

1 Merlin

1 Least Flycatcher

1 Philadelphia Vireo

1 Red-eyed Vireo

1 Pine Siskin

I'd say Willow or Alder Flycatcher, which are nearly identical, and even their calls can be confused. Just say "Empidonax". 😉

I had a Yellow Warbler (why I always use caps) in my lilac bush yesterday.

[Maine-birds] 2 Yellow-crowned Night-Herons, Cutler, 8/26

Hi all,

This impressive irruption/displacement event of YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continues. Yesterday evening, Renee and Andy Patterson, Jeannette, and I had 2 juveniles while walking the dogs on Cove Road in Cutler Harbor. They were where the road crosses the cove of Schooner Brook. These birds may have been present for as much as 1-2 weeks.

An extremely rare bird in Washington County and perhaps the county's first record of more than 1 (fide Chris Bartlett), one has to wonder how many of these southern herons are along our shores right now.

Hi all,

Yesterday morning I was birding at Hemlock Bridge RD in Fryburg, and came across a group of 60+ Pine Warblers. I have seen PIWA's here in the past but usually only in small groups. I have never seen such a large flock of PIWA's before, so I thought it was worth sharing.

[Maine-birds] Marsh Crossbills

Yesterday morning I stopped by the Eastern Trail parking lot at Scarborough Marsh and had two flyover Red Crossbills, which landed briefly in a stand of white pines by the edge of the marsh. According to ebird, this is the first record for the marsh (not including Prouts Neck) in over 38 years!

Thought that was something worth sharing...

Ps. There seems to be a large white pine cone crop this year, so keep an eye out for crossbills in other places as well

[Maine-birds] ID help -- Wilson's Phalarope?

Hello Maine Birders,

Heck of a day at Scarborough Marsh this morning.  American Avocet, to start off with…

But before that I was taking pictures of yellowlegs, and this one struck me as odd from afar.  Behaving very differently, and swimming as much as wading.  I knew it was something else, but did not have my guidebook with me.

Fast forward to tonight downloading my pics.  Can anyone confirm this is a Wilson's Phalarope?  That is my working hypothesis at this moment.  It would be a lifer so I feel the need for confirmation.  Or not, as the case may be.

Thanks for any help, and stay safe out there,

I just watched a red-eyed vireo feeding a youngster. The immature bird is old enough to forage as well, since I watched it do that, too. I understand that red-eyed vireos can do two broods, but I can’t say that I’ve ever seen it this far north. Warm summer?

[Maine-birds] Ground-nesting Great Horned Owl evidence

Hi all - My sister and her husband spent a night kayak-camping on an island near Castine. They shared pictures with me that may be evidence of a Great Horned Owl that made its nest on the ground. There's a very large fragment of an off-white egg shell that is large enough to sit in the palm of a paddler's glove (for scale). There are two pictures of a ground nest site that was clearly a nest but with no real construction. I did some background reading in Harrison's Nests, Eggs and Nestlings of NA Birds, and in Erlich's Birder's Handbook, and also at Birds of the World online. All of these state that Great Horned Owls occasionally choose the ground as a nest site.

Extraordinarily variable; wider range of nest sites than any other bird in the Americas (Baumgartner 1938c). Most commonly uses tree nests of other species in whatever tree is available, but also uses cavities in trees and snags, cliffs, deserted buildings, artificial platforms, ledges, pipes, and will lay eggs on the ground. - Birds of the World online

I'm pretty convinced, personally.

Have others found ground nesting Great Horned Owls in their travels? It's a first for me, but that may just be my bad sleuthing.

(I'm not sharing the photos in this email because of the listserv's guidelines about attachments, but could share by request.)

Cheers,
Craig K
