[Maine-birds] Snowy Owls in Trenton (airport)

Around 4 P.M.today, two Snowies were still obliging - one atop a utility pole along the airport access road, and the other atop a tower near the north end of the runway. The latter was best observed by parking in the driveway of an old, abandoned restaurant along Rte. 1A.

[Maine-birds] Bald eagles over Farmington

The Sandy River in Farmington seems to be pulling in the bald eagles this winter. I've seen a few this winter flying around. In fact from Strong south to Farmington on Rt 4 has been a good place to see them.

[Maine-birds] The Return of Godzilla

For the past 2 or 3 winters (or more?) a rather outsized GOOSE, mostly white, some blue-gray shading here and there, has joined a small flock of Canada Geese at various spots near the tip of the Phippsburg Peninsula.   This evening (dusk) he was spotted with a small group of regular geese foraging on the Sprague River saltmarsh, which adjoins Seawall Beach.

Just don't turn your back on him and you should be OK.

[Maine-birds] Additional Highlights This Week, 1/25-31

 Hi all,

Just a few additional observations of note from me in the past seven days included:
- 21 Eastern Bluebirds (good local winter count), Harraseeket Yacht Club, South Freeport, 1/25 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk Group).
- 1 immature Northern Shrike, Desert Road, Freeport, 1/25-27.
- 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS (one drake, one immature male) continue, Westbrook Riverwalk, 1/27 (photos).
- 1 GRAY CATBIRD, Harraseeket Yacht Club, 1/29 - shocking considering the severity of the winter.  Loosely associating with continued large flock of mixed frugivores (robins, Cedar Waxwings, bluebirds, and House Finches).
- 15+ Dunlin, Winslow Park, Freeport, 1/31.

- 4 drake Barrow's Goldeneyes continue in the Harraseeket River in South Freeport, usually seen between the Freeport Town Wharf and Winslow Park.
- The Merganser "Hat Trick" continues at Grist Mill Park in Yarmouth.

- 1 adult PROBABLE Iceland Gull is back at Riverbank Park in Westbrook, as previously reported by Noah Gibb.  I finally had a chance to photograph it on Monday, and I posted a blog about it's identification - or, really, my attempt to identify it over the past four years:

Re: [Maine-birds] Are the Snowy Owls still in Biddeford?

Yesterday late afternoon, we saw 2 snowys on the tower west of eastern point. Could see from binoculars but better with scope.

On another note saw at least a dozen bluebirds in kittery on the way to the fort and at the fort. Also in the same area, 2 red tail hawks. One sitting in the tree at the fort, did not move when we were close. The other in marsh near parsons beach with a small bird in it's talons. Roberta

[Maine-birds] Northern Hawk Owl in Lincoln

Today at 12:15 I was rewarded on my 4th attempt at finding Lincoln's Northern Hawk Owl, a first for me. He was at the usual intersection (Machias Savings & Emera) on the telephone pole crossbar across from the bank scanning the field. I got off a few good camera shots before he disappeared while I was watching traffic.

The driving was sketchy at best, but we figured that if we failed to spot the owl, we could at least salvage our efforts by visiting my favorite Tim Hortons in Maine. As it was, we found the owl within 10 minutes as it flew up to perch on a utility pole along Rt 2 just south of the now-famous intersection (time 11:20). I was parked at the Emera Maine building, which is also just south of said intersection. At one point the owl made an attempt at some unseen (to us) prey in the adjoining field, putting on a nice display of its flying skills, but returned to the pole empty-taloned. After 10-15 minutes of pole-sitting, it flew across to the opposite

Hi Paul,

I read your post several days ago and took your report with me. I'm visiting a friend about an hour north of Lincoln and decided to give it a shot at your location. When I arrived yesterday afternoon "3:00ish" from my 5 1/2 hour ride from boston I found nothing. So I went to mc d's to get something to eat, which I normally would never but I was starving! And drove back to that intersection and parked in that JW parking lot that was empty. When I finished eating and was ready to leave, what was staring at me on the primary wires just above..... YES!!! The Northern Hawk Owl!!! I got some good pictures, I can send you them if you want. He gave me a show, about 10 minutes of flying from line to line looking for prey then decided to leave north towards the hills. To me this is a life bird, so thank you!!

[Maine-birds] ATTN: NH Spotted Towhee eBird hot spot

Maine and Massachusetts Birders,

For those of you aware of and chasing the Spotted Towhee on the NH coast, we have created a “Stakeout” hot spot for it in eBird. So as to ensure all the data are in as accurate a location as possible, we request that

a)      New observers use this hotspot, and

b)      People who have already eBirded the towhee merge their personal location with the hotspot.

The hot spot is called : stakeout Spotted Towhee, Central Rd. at Rt. 1A, Rye (2014)

Instructions for merging follow:

TO MERGE a Personal LOCATION with a HOT SPOT:

1. Click on "My EBird" at the top right of any page

2. Click on “Manage my locations" on the list on the right

3. Find the location that you want to merge

4. At the far right of the site entry, click "edit".

5. This should pull up a map with your location at the center and several round “radio buttons” above the map next to the words: Rename, Move, Merge.

6. Click the "Merge" button and pre-existing hot spots should appear on the map as red “pins” and your personal locations as blue “pins”.

7. Click on the hot spot you wish to merge your location WITH (your location will be indicated by a green and red symbol). The name of the hot spot will appear at the top of the map indicating how many checklists you are merging with that spot.

8. We highly recommend that you check the box next to “delete after merging” – this will not delete your data or the merged location, it will simply delete that original location so you won’t be tempted to use it again.

9. Click on the square box labeled “Merge”

10. eBird will ask if you are sure. Double check before you click “Yes” as this action can’t be undone!

All your records for the old location will get relabeled in the database as the pre-existing hot spot. This is the location that will now appear in "my locations." You can always rename a hot spot within your "my locations" list, but that won't change the name in the eBird database. Thanks for considering merging your locations with existing hotspots! This helps make the data consistent among users and thus increases its value to conservation.

Thanks,

Pam Hunt

Concord, NH

On behalf of the NH eBird team

[Maine-birds] King Eider, Ogunquit

At the end of Stearns Road, Ogunquit around 3:30 today I noted a large duck near the limit of binocular range on relatively calm water.   The duck had black wings and sides, black back, whitish breast and pale greyish head, noticeably short orange bill. I called out to get others on the bird, and then I got it in the scope.  In the scope the bird appeared to lack an obvious knob but otherwise looked like a male King Eider.  The bird was diving giving three of us brief shared telescope views.  While we were excited and sidetracked fruitlessly reviewing various guides for details on the knob development, the bird vanished and couldn't be relocated.  The tide was going out quickly while we were there.

Fwd: [Maine-birds] query about hawk-owls

Hi, Bob -- here's a potential vignette for your article:

A few years ago we watched a Black-capped Chickadee harassing the Northern Hawk-owl that was seen in Warren.

Scolding constantly, the chickadee pecked and pestered the hawk-owl's feet and undertail from below, as the owl sat perched at the tip-top of a skinny conifer.

The hawk-owl's fierce and "ticked-off" demeanor was priceless! To my knowledge the crazed chickadee survived, as the hawk-owl shortly rocketed off in pursuit of a passing MODO.

Peace & good birding,

I've been trying all winter to improve my gull ids, I took these photos today at the Portland Fish Pier, tertials mostly brown, tail is speckled, neat and checkered markings on plumage, etc., I guess my question is which is it!
Thanks for any input, my guess is a darker Kumlien's but I'm not sure

[Maine-birds] Gilsland Farm Birdwalk & "Birding with your Smartphone" Workshop TONIGHT

Hey everyone:

Following last week's walk at -7ºF, today's 9ºF felt lovely. The birds were fairly quiet but activity picked up as the sun rose and temperatures increased toward the end of the walk. We managed to tally 21 species of probably the most expected birds but as Kristen hinted at, frugivores were present and increasing: Americans Robins were steadily streaming over and a couple groups of Cedar Waxwings helped with today's diversity.

The highlight of the walk did go to the 'non-avian' category: walking down the frozen Presumpscot was an Eastern coyote (Canis latrans)! This wet canid was maneuvering around the ice trying to find a way back to dry land as we watched from the bluff in the West Meadow. It was pretty cool to watch the coyote 'reach out' and test the ice before continuing forward. Here is a photo I managed to digiscope before my fingers froze: http://www.flickr.com/photos/113213944@N04/12223595034/

A complete checklist from the walk is available at: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S16725469

I also wanted to post a reminder that I'll be giving a workshop tonight on "birding with your smartphone" at Gilsland Farm starting at 7pm. We will discuss which apps are 'worth it', how to use some of those apps, the basics of digiscoping with your phone (so you too can take pictures of coyotes!), and much more! Details are online at: http://maineaudubon.org/events/birding-in-a-digital-age-part-three/

[Maine-birds] query about hawk-owls

So I was just thinking…

Every time I see a northern hawk-owl, it is teed up at the top of the tree where it would be an easy target for harassment by crows. Yet, I’ve never seen them bothered. Other owls would certainly be harassed. Has anyone ever seen crows hassle a hawk-owl? Is anyone familiar with any science that would explain why they are not viewed with concern by crows? I’m thinking it might make a nice newspaper column.

[Maine-birds] Frugivores Invade Camden

...coming soon, to a back yard near you!

On my way to work this morning I passed a flock of 30-40 robins and 4 Cedar Waxwings foraging in crab apples and sumacs along Thomas St. in Camden.

Yesterday from the office we watched an adult Bald Eagle soaring over Mount Battie. Not a rare sight here, a fact for which we are grateful, but still always worth a pause to enjoy.

[Maine-birds] Re: Razorbills

When you say, "do the island tour", looking for Razorbills on land I assume that you mean Machias Seal Island, although there are Razos on other islands.
There is one boat sailing out of Cutler, Maine (Bold Coast Tours) and one boat out of Grand Manan, New Brunswick (SeaWatch Tours), both of which hold permits to land people on the MSI.

How late is, "late July"?
Razorbills are the earliest of the Alcids to leave the colony and the timing varies year by year, largely determined by the food supply of that year.
That said, by the last week in July the Razorbills could be scarce, especially if the weather is good.
For example, I reported on July 29th, 2012:
"The ALCIDS are well advanced with their rearing.  Nearly all of the RAZORBILLS & MURRES have left although there are a few very late hatchings. Of course there are a few adults simply hanging around."

[Maine-birds] Fruit eaters descend on Unity

Over the course of the last week a flock of robins has appeared at Unity College.  Today there were at least 50 which were accompanied by at least 125 Cedar and 10 Bohemian Waxwings.  The birds are feeding in the multiflora rose thickets behind the Eastview dorm which is across the street from the main campus.  Many of the male robins look really dark and seem good candidates for the Newfoundland race.

[Maine-birds] Bullock'S Oriole

Hello Everyone,

I have returned every day to try and get a better image of this bird to verify that is in fact a Bullock's Oriole and it definitely appears to be.
I spent two hours today out in freezing cold and wind hoping to get a good shot of the bird and it finally appeared for less than a minute and
I was able to get these two images of it before it flew off into the woods. You can see them on my flickr page.

[Maine-birds] Spotted Towhee (Rye, NH) and 6 woodpecker day

I had to go down to Portsmouth this morning, so I went a little farther to look for the Spotted Towhee that was found over the weekend. The bird was still present in the small copse of trees and shrubs on the North side of the intersection of Ocean Ave and Central Rd in Rye, NH. Photos here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S16544164

Also somehow managed a six-woodpecker day today. Northern Flicker flyby while looking for the towhee, A Pileated Woodpecker along I-95, my continuing Yellow-bellied Sapsucker made another appearance (Park St. Kennebunk, ME), and was joined by RBWO, DOWO, and HAWO at the feeders. Made me want to go back up to Bath to get the RHWO again!

Cheers,

[Maine-birds] Lincoln N Hawk Owl update

Despite today's rain and snow, Gloria and I ventured up the 95 to Lincoln to find the N. HAWK OWL. After 10-15 minutes of pole-sitting, it flew across to the opposite corner of the intersection, perching in the tallest pine tree at the Larkin Enterprises building. By then the snow had turned to rain, so we held a celebratory après-bird at Tims, then slip-slided back home down route 2.

No go on the Thayer's this afternoon. I arrived to the Shawmut dam around 2pm and there were not a whole lot of gulls to speak of, but 15 Iceland Gulls (14 1st cycle and 1 3rd cycle) were above the dam amongst the mere 65-75 gulls.

I ran into birder Bruce Cole about 20 minutes later and we were treated to a large flock of Goldeneyes (120-150 or better) below the dam that would drift downstream with the current and eventually fly en masse back up towards the dam. As the birds drifted by us again we counted 4 drakes and 1 hen Barrow's float by. I noticed from my photos when I got home that 2-3 hens were present so at least 6-7 Barrow's Goldeneye's are in the area! Bruce also picked out a continuing Northern Pintail on the Flood Brothers side of the river with Mallards and Black Ducks.

We checked Flood Bros. after (Bruce had already been here before I ran into him at the dam with no luck on THGU) and there were no gulls present. 11 Horned Larks was cool though.

Just kidding! I just noticed that Bruce got a photo of the bird (THGU) around 12:10. He must have noticed the bird in his photos when he got home.

His photo is at the link below. The bird is in the center of the photo behind the Glaucous Gull.
