[Maine-birds] mixed precipitation & 21 cedar waxwings

The birds are acting like shoppers in a newly stocked paper products isle.
Franticly demolishing the winter berries & sumac.
Robins to difficult to count as they zoom from worms to shrubs, a FOY pair of cardinals and also FOY, 21 cedar waxwings moving en mass around the buffet. Not to be outdone, the titmice, chickadees, and nuthatches are keeping a constant flow at the feeder.

More birds than we've seen all month.

17 people visited the hawk watch today.

Weather:
Beautiful day to be outside! Light northwest winds quickly turning west for the morning and then southeast through the afternoon made for an excellent morning and mid-day flight.

Raptor Observations:
The winds were pretty favorable through the morning with lots of activity in the sky and a lot of birds moving. Activity diminished rapidly as winds turned southeast for the afternoon. Finally had a nice little movement of Sharp-shinned Hawks.

Non-raptor Observations:
35 species were observed from the summit. Those individuals deemed migrant included: 104 American Goldfinches 116 Canada Geese 34 American Robins 22 Common Grackles 13 Red-winged Blackbirds 36 Blackbird sp. 4 European Starlings 5 Sandhill Cranes 5 Purple Finches 1 Eastern Phoebe 2 Tree Swallows 9 Common Mergansers 5 duck sp. 1 Great Blue Heron

Predictions:
Looks like plenty of rain for tomorrow. If lucky, there might be a little time in the early morning, but that seems pretty optimistic.

Song Sparrow. Re: [Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights and New Arrivals, 3/21-27

Having not been out at all, I was pleased to see a Song Sparrow in my yard late this afternoon, as well as a
beautiful White-throated Sparrow. Juncos have gone, but for one today. A Purple Finch was here the other day. Robin finally appeared. Sure would love to see some ducks.

Hi all,

Limited birding - and limited progression of spring -  this week produced only the following highlights:
- 4 fly-over Horned Larks, our yard in Pownal - Yard Bird #127!
- only 8 species of waterfowl at the Mouth of the Abby, Bowdoinham, on 3/26, led by 400+ American Black Ducks but including 8 Northern Pintails.
- nice wave of Song Sparrows late this week.

And my personal FOYs this week included:
- 2 Wood Ducks, Old Town House Park, North Yarmouth, 3/21.
- 1 Spring Peeper, Spear Farm Estuary Preserve, Yarmouth, 3/27.

Bird Safe,
Derek

Raptor Observations:
Mostly Turkey Vultures moving again today. Strong northwest winds kept most birds at a distance from the summit.

Non-raptor Observations:
24 species were observed from the summit today; The highlight most certainly being our first Sandhill Cranes of the season. Those deemed migrating included: 19 American Goldfinches 7 American Robins 26 American Black Ducks 9 Blackbird sp. 9 Sandhill Cranes 39 Canada Geese 2 Purple Finches

It's that interesting transition between winter and spring with winter birds heading north (tree sparrows, juncos) just as the spring migrants are showing up. Nice to hear some birdsong right now.

[Maine-birds] closure of 10 Midcoast and Southern coast state parks

In case this might affect your birding plans, the state closed 10 parks at midnight, including Two Lights, Reid, and Kettle Cove.  It's keeping a close eye on Bradbury Mountain, Wolfe's Neck, Sebago, and Range Pond due to recent crowds there.  Here's the announcement:

Effective Friday, March 27 at 12:01 am, the following Midcoast and Southern Maine coastal State Parks and beaches are closed until April 8: Reid State Park, Popham Beach State Park, Fort Popham, Fort Baldwin, Kettle Cove State Park, Two Lights State Park, Crescent Beach State Park, Scarborough Beach State Park, Ferry Beach State Park, and Mackworth Island. (Note that the closure could be extended depending on the spread of the potentially deadly virus.)

Overcrowding in the past few weeks has made it increasingly difficult for the public to implement appropriate physical distancing. As a result, the department is closing select coastal parks and beaches and monitoring visitation at all State Parks. Additionally, last weekend, the BPL recorded heavy use at Sebago Lake State Park, Range Pond State Park, Wolfe's Neck State Park and Bradbury Mountain State Park. With warm temperatures, overcrowding may become an issue requiring additional measures in these and other State Parks. The BPL is calling on visitors to be mindful of crowding and to seek alternate close-to-home spots to get outside, including back yards and neighborhoods, land trust trails, wildlife management areas, and public lands.

"Closing any of our State Parks is the last thing we want to do," DACF Commissioner Amanda Beal stated. "We are keeping as many parks as possible open, and we encourage people to look for ways to take much-needed breaks in the outdoors that allow them to avoid crowded places and maintain physical distancing."

The department will work closely with local, county, and state public safety officials as it modifies park operations. Other measures taken to date by the BPL include canceling all park events and closing all playgrounds and public restrooms. Additional steps under consideration for this weekend involve restricting vehicular traffic and parking at some parks to reduce the concentration of visitors.

The BPL has set up a webpage with a list of park closures and descriptions of curtailed services at www.parksandlands.com/covid19. During the closures, BPL staff will continue patrolling parks and will work with local and state law enforcement to enforce all coronavirus guidelines and park regulations.

Full announcement is here:  https://www.maine.gov/governor/mills/news/select-coastal-state-parks-closed-due-overcrowding-2020-03-26

Weather:
Cold start and poor visibility until temperatures began rising quickly around 1000 (EST). Winds out of the northeast through the majority of the count were a little stronger than expected for the first hour, calming thereafter.

Raptor Observations:
Limited activity in the sky until about 1000 (EST). I spent the first two hours of the count watching a local pair of Red-tailed Hawks, Bald Eagles, and Red-shouldered Hawks make rounds of their claimed territories in the area while the Common Ravens played and harassed every avian individual in the vicinity. Migration was slow and intermittent. Exactly half of todays migrating raptors were Turkey Vultures, although a Northern Harrier and second year Bald eagle passed near the summit late in the day.

Non-raptor Observations:
24 species were observed from the summit. Individuals deemed migrating included: 35 American Goldfinches 2 Mallards

Sunny skies and light northwest winds tomorrow. If winds stay light enough we may see some birds moving.
