Re: [Maine-birds] Stellar's Sea Eagle Chase

My husband and I will be checking out Georgetown, Reid state park, and will be exploring other areas, possibly Hermit Island (is there access there in the winter?).  Communication on this thread would be great if it is spotted.  Thank you so much, Aletha Boyle

Subject: [Maine-birds] Stellar's Sea Eagle Chase

Good Evening,

As the Maine Birding community knows by now, the Steller's Sea Eagle that has appeared in Texas, Alaska, Nova Scotia and Massachusetts was photographed this afternoon near the Five Islands Lobster Pound in Georgetown.  It had flown by the time birders began to arrive around 3:30.

The bird appears to be move north along the coast (but it of course may back track) and we're pretty certain we won't be the only birders searching in the morning.  The purpose of this e-mail is to put some structure into the search.

We're planning to be searching the Boothbay/East Boothbay areas.

Jeff Cherry and Andy Brand are working Pemiquid Point up to Great Salt Bay.

Other areas that might be worth checking out:
    •    Bath Landfill and Bath Waterfront
    •    Popham Beach
    •    Hermit Island
    •    Reid State Park
    •    Bailey Island
    •    Mere Point
    •    New Harbor
    •    Wiscasset/Westport
    •    A dozen places I haven't thought about

So if you're interested in helping with the search . . . grab an area and reply all to this e-mail.  Obviously multiple birders can check the same area.

It tends to associate with Bald Eagles and seems to rest in trees for long periods of time before moving on.

Thanks,

Ethan Whitaker - 207-671-2006
Ingrid Whitaker - 207-653-2604

I second Rob's thanks to all. It was an exciting end/ or maybe start/ to a new year. Thanks, too, to the gentleman who offered me his telescope just as the bird spread its wings to fly. What a view! Truly, a lifetime experience.

Thanks,

[Maine-birds] Five Islands Parking Lot

Hi all,

If - and I think this is a big if - that the bird is relocated in the harbor at Five Islands, Georgetown, please keep in mind that this is a small working pier and parking is fairly limited at the dock. While the restaurant is not open at this time of year, it's still an active lobster fishing wharf.

There is, however, a small public parking lot a very short distance away. Please consider using this, and carpooling is highly recommended.

If….
