The following relates to the Christmas Bird Count but is for entertainment purposes only. There are bound to be mistakes. I heard people saying that the birding isn't like what it was 20 years ago so here is a comparison between the 2017 and the 1997 CBCs. As for the total species only identified species were counted, hybrids were not included either. The counts that had been submitted by the 2/28/18 deadline are the ones included.
--2017 there were 31 counts. 1997 had 21
--167661 birds were tallied in 2017. 156609 in 1997
--Average number per count: 5408 in 2017 and 7458 in 1997 (yes, I know that bird/party hour are what is used statistically, basic averages are used here)
--Total species reported: 142 in 2017 and 141 in 1997 (remember, only identified species are listed)
--Counts with the most species: Portland in 2017 with 94. Bath, Portland, and York tied in 1997 with 84 species each
--Lowest number of species: Misery in 2017 and Misery in 1997 both years having 20 species.
--Appearing on all 31 counts this year: Blue Jay, Crow, Black-capped Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Dark-eyed Junco, and Goldfinch. Twenty years ago it was Mourning Dove, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Blue Jay, Crow, B-c Chickadee, and White-breasted Nuthatch.
--Five most abundant in 2017 were: Crow 20045, Starling 16346, Herring Gull 13315, Mallard 9648, rock Dove 9611.
Five most abundant in 1997 were: Herring Gull 20796, Common Eider 17436, Starling 15051, B-c Chickadee 11184, Crow 10138
--Single birds in 2017: Spruce Grouse, Pied-b Grebe, Ruddy Turnstone, Parasitic Jaeger, Thick-billed Murre, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Winter Wren, Orange-crn Warbler, Black and White Warbler, Lark Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, Indigo Bunting, Painted Bunting, and Dickcissel,
--Counts with over 10K birds: Augusta, Biddeford, Portland, Waterville, and York County.
--Dates: 10 were held on 12/16 and 6 on 12/30. There rest were scattered between 12/14 and 1/3. Most of the single birds were on the 12/16 dates. There was bare ground and moderate temperatures. There was a drop in temperature and freeze-up of fresh water and soil after 12/21
--Some selected species averaged per count. The first is 1997/ the second is 2017
