Hello All,

A Pine Grosbeak is snacking this morning on a crabapple, Malus "Louisa", a nice compact weeping crabapple with persistent fruit purchased through FEDCO trees.  Last week two were feeding on "White Cloud" from FEDCO.  FEDCO is a Maine source for seeds, nursery stock and growing supplies, much grown in Maine.

These two trees were more or less ignored by robins and thrushes throughout the fall.  Some of us are speculating that biochemical changes aka "ripening" occurs at different times over the fall/winter season making different Malus cultivars more or less attractive as the seasons progress.  It is well known by apple growers that there are culinary apples that are nearly inedible when picked but very flavorful after a month or more in storage.  This is common with many pear varieties.
