some good duck activity in the past week and a half--especially on those days when the ice has begun to appear in the coves of the pond--good but brief sightings of three wood ducks and a ring-necked pair, and daily visits from a hooded merganser pair--a flotilla of mallards with two black ducks moves back and forth--and two mallards trundle up to the feeder in the morning--. I have enjoyed watching the mallards actually dive, submerging themselves just off shore under the oak trees and emerging with acorns--they really are diving and not just dabbling, close to shore but totally under water--
the usual bluejays, chickadees, wb nuthatches, and tufted titmice are at the feeders, and hairy and downy woodpeckers are on the suet-- one suet cake hangs so close to one window that I can see the lovely soft color on the underside of the hairy woodpecker's tail--
today's delight was the appearance of a red-bellied woodpecker--I had thought I had heard one but couldn't quite believe it, then there he was--I hope he will reappear--
