Hi Folks,
I spoke with a friend and birding colleague, George Herrick, who has been out on Roque Island all week (1,300 acre island in Jonesport). George reported a Hooded warbler on Thursday or Friday, which is interesting in that there were HOWAs on Machias Seal Island during the same time interval. I think it is the fourth record with the first banded in the mid 1990s.
He also got an excellent view of a Red-shouldered hawk on the island. Red-shouldered hawks breed in low numbers in eastern Washington Co., where they used to be relatively rare, even during migration.
Other birds of interest on Roque included Cape May, bay-breasted, BTNW, NAWA, NOPA, YRWA, WIWA, NOWA, MAGW, OVEN, Blackpolls, YBFL, white-winged crossbills, a tail-flapping beaver and many Swainson's thrushes and Hermit thrushes. Along the shore there were large flocks of adult black guillemots (50+). A nesting merlin was present also with a half dozen pairs of starlings occupying cavities (not welcomed on the island). No shorebirds yet.
