[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

Rather quiet lately. No big movements. No real surprises.

There are still a few PUFFINS feeding young.

Storm Petrels have had a couple very active nights this past week.
I checked and released >50 LEACHE'S STORM PETRELS one night, as well as about 10 WILSON'S STORM PETRELS.
3 Leache's were missing a foot. That seems a common thing with Petrels.

Shorebirds are scattered around and can be encountered most anywhere.
PHALOROPES are notable night travellers as well as appearing occasionally on the island during the day.

Small groups of SHARP SHINNED HAWKS have stopped briefly on clear days, frequently squabbling over the same prey while the prey makes good its escape.

In recent days, a couple EAGLES, especially a 1st year bird, have been trying to socialize with the gulls. The gulls aren't very sociable and almost all of them decline the dinner invitations.

Bird of the day: AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER.
What appears to be a male, just losing its breeding plumage, has been hanging around the lawn, close to the patio, for two days. It's fairly tolerant and immediately returns when flushed. A great chance to watch feeding and other behavior.
