They are actually a resident flock centered around Southwest Harbor on MDI.  They overwinter there, where they are feed and cared for by members of the Southwest Harbor Polo and Yacht Club, of which they are the official mascots and centerpiece of the clubs annual "Flamingo Festival" fundraiser, or, depending on which cocktail party you attend, hairraiser.

The especially shiny feathers and bent bill might lead one to believe it to be an off color Glossy Ibis that flew, at high speed, into the side of a cruise ship.
