[Maine-birds] Fwd: Black tern research at Messalonskee

I'm forwarding this note from Keel Kemper, Regional Biologist, MDIFW.  As you can read below, there will be Black Tern research at Messalonksee, so please don't assume that someone close to the colony is unnecessarily disturbing the terns.  The biologists are qualified and very experienced and will be in uniforms.

Lovely spring birds everywhere.

Best,

Peter

Hi Keel,
Dr. Patricia Szczys, from Eastern Connecticut State University will be sampling black terns at Messalonskee Lake this spring as part of a genetics study.  She is looking at the dispersal patterns and resulting population differentiation across their range.  She plans to sample up to 25 birds, some from Messalonskee.  Don McDougal will be keeping tabs on birds to optimize the timing.  She will also band them with USGS bands as well as color bands (different color for each colony).

Thank you,
Danielle
