Re: [Maine-birds] Ducktrap River Preserve, Lincolnville, 5.13.15,

Kristen was kind enough to give me suggestions of several places in Waldo County that I could try birding and one was the Ducktrap River Preserve.  I tried it yesterday morning and I was really impressed.  Not only was it a beautiful spot but I encountered the highest number of Black-throated Blue Warblers (BTBW) that I've ever had.  By making brief stops by car along the road in the preserve and hiking the River Trail, among others, I wound up with 36.  They were only edged out for the most numerous bird by Black-throated Greens (BTNW) with 38.  Both species were calling just about everywhere.  Awesome experience and a lovely place.  Thanks again Kristen.

Cloe Chunn, Gary Gulezian and I led a joint outing today for Coastal Mountains Land Trust and Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition at the Land Trust's Ducktrap River Preserve. The preserve had a rough winter and a lot of trees are still down across the trail. Birding was relatively slow (apparently we missed a good fallout yesterday), but a good time was had by all on this beautiful preserve along the river. We totaled 31 species over 2.5 hrs.

Highlights included:

Blackburnian Warbler - several, offering exciting views
Black-throated Blue Warbler - ditto
Nashville Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
Pine Warbler
(11 warbler species total)

Broad-winged Hawk - 2 calling to each other (in love or in war?)
Bald Eagle - 2-3 flying upriver eyeing the shad run
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Winter Wren - hearing that song arise from the dense forest makes one believe in fairy magic
FOY Scarlet Tanager - another song I associate with this place

Also noted with joy: Painted Trillium, Wild Oats, Trailing Arbutus, Dwarf Ginseng, Canada Mayflower
