Re: [Maine-birds] YELLOW-BILLED LOON, Ellsworth, 7/17

Hi all,

So the plot thickens. First, both Jeff Gordon and I have only viewed this photo on our respective phones. Neither of us happen to be near a computer.

Although the photos clearly show a loon with a bill that appears yellow, there has been further discussion by the observer and his friend (and several others, myself included). Here's two snippets of pertinent correspondence regarding the initial report(s):

From Brian Raicich via Jeff Gordon:
"Just got back and no luck on my kayak trip around the NE Cove. Will continue to scan into the evening and plan to be out at sunrise. Unfortunately our rental ends tomorrow at noon. Here is the link to Brian Yohannan's photos on Flickr. https://www.flickr.com/photos/134751316@N07/shares/hw0106"

Followed by this message to Jeff from Brian. Note, this is currently be called a "possible" Yellow-billed Loon by the observer:

"Hi Jeff, We are vacationing with friends on Green Lake, Ellsworth, Maine. Our friend with us, Brian Yohannan, kayaked at dawn this morning and took the attached photos with his iPhone. He didn't share them with me until this afternoon, when he asked if the local loons ever have yellow bills. Realizing a Yellow-billed Loon is probably not a realistic option, I immediately jumped online to see if this full yellow bill is a possible odd variance with Common Loons. I shared with BQ (Brian Quindlen, who was up last week with us on the lake). I had Brian Yohannan post to eBird and Flickr. I've been scanning the cove all afternoon and we plan to kayak at dusk to see if we can relocate."

Needless to say, more details and subsequent observations would be most welcome!
