[Maine-birds] Belgrade Purple Martin update

Hi All,

Don Mairs and I were back to work today renovating the Depot Road Purple Martin colony in Belgrade. We cleaned and removed the new gourds for the winter, and were excited to confirm that one martin pair fledged young from one of the gourds at the current colony site! This was unexpected given the late date of our installation.

We also removed one of the most dilapidated houses. We also took down the pole (which, we found was sunk into the ground about four feet and then filled with cement so that was a lot of fun to deal with) as we would like a net zero increase (or less) in the number of obstacles the homeowner has to deal with.

We have two or three houses (including a new house with a gourd array) that have been donated to the cause, and we will slowly replace all of the old houses to refurbish the colony. We hope to have at least one more new house installed in time for the next breeding season.

For more information on the ongoing project, and a recap of the first phase from early this summer, see:
