[Maine-birds] Monhegan update, 9.22.15

After the wind shifted Sunday night, some new birds came in yesterday, so there were a lot more birds around and a little more diversity, especially with warblers. Unfortunately most of them seem to have left last night, as today is notably quieter (with the exception of Merlins, which seem to be everywhere!)

Of interest:
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - several birds noted today (first ones I've seen since I got here)
Philadelphia Vireo - several seen around the island throughout the day
DICKCISSEL - 1 female noted by Bryan Pfeiffer's group this morning, then 1 was seen later (by his group) being eaten by a Merlin at the Ice Pond; I heard 1 bird later this morning
BLUE GROSBEAK - 1 heard this morning near Winterworks
RUSTY BLACKBIRD - 2 birds seen Mon. a.m.
Bobolinks - several birds heard around the Meadow yesterday and today

Warblers - new species for me have included Pine and Cape May. Yesterday others saw Canada, Tennessee, and Bay-breasted.

1 - 2 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continue at the Ice Pond in early morning, accompanied by 1 Black-crowned.

Especially exciting and heartening yesterday was the number of Monarchs flying around, and we've found many chrysalises and a few caterpillars in small patches of milkweed.
