Fleeing for home from Monhegan ahead of the rains today, on the 12:30 boat back to Port Clyde, I was excited to see a Northern Fulmar fly past the boat just off the east side Burnt Island. I had been pointing out the gannets (many adults out there today) and gulls streaming past to a neophyte birder, showing her the difference between the wing pattern on a gannet vs. a gull, when the fulmar joined the parade. A couple of birder photographers on the boat even got photos. Don't think I've ever seen one that close to shore or from the Monhegan boat before.
