[Maine-birds] Monhegan

Lots of birders...lots of birds. 

Highlights so far today for me include Black-crowned AND Yellow-crowned Night Herons at the Ice Pond early AM. Wonderful look at an Am Bittern yesterday at the Ice Pond. Also Summer Tanager today near the church (seen by many) for prolonged periods along with BG Gnatcatcher and good numbers of warblers (and species).  

Sparrows for me so far  limited to one Lark, one Clay-colored, one Lincoln and a handful of Songs. Big numbers have not arrived. 

Five species of vireos reported yesterday including Yellow-throated.

No YH Blackbird again today.  

I had three Whimbrels flying overhead a few days ago and another twosome reported yesterday. I have had Least Sands, Semi Sand, Lesser Yellowlegs and Spotted Sand at Lobster Cove. Solitary Sand at the Ice Pond. 

Up to four possible Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Certainly two that I have seen together on the harbor rocks. 

Multiple sightings of Dickcissels. First land birds I saw when I got off the boat!

Lots of Merlins. A few Peregrines. Numerous Sharpies. A few Ospreys. Bald Eagles. Kestrels. 

Very large numbers of Cedar Waxwings!!

Few Monarchs: 18 sighted by me on Weds, 5 yesterday, only one so far today as of 1 PM.

Before we forget to post, my son Evan and I watched from the window of the A1 Diner in Gardiner a (late) Common Nighthawk feeding over Cobbossee Stream.

Earlier in the day, Jeff had a Philadelphia Vireo and Cape Warbler in the crab apple tree in our Gardiner yard. (Pretty sure Philly Vireo is a new yard bird for us!)
