[Maine-birds] Possible CLAPPER RAIL - Yes!, Jones Creek, 9:25am

Hi all,

Despite yesterday's lack of sightings (and thank you Ron for posting the negative report), Jeannette and I decided to give it a try this am, as the tide was just starting to go out.

At approx 9:25 am, just as the creek's mud became exposed along the edge of the marsh, the possible CLAPPER RAIL appeared for all of two minutes. From the "beach" just south of the boat launch into Jones Creek from the Pine Point parking lot looking up the creek nearly as far as visible.

I managed some distant phone-scoped photos, but they will add little to the identification discussion.

After about two minutes, it spastically fluttered into the grass and we have not seen it again.

Also, the breeding-plumaged DUNLIN continues, and Jeannette photographed it closely, and next to a juvenile. It is NOT a European Dunlin, and contrary to my earlier opinion, there are definitely a few new, basic-plumage greater coverts. Which North American subspecies it is is definitely a matter of debate, however.
