Re: [Maine-birds] RFI - Ferry to Nova Scotia Birding Potential

Mike,
Sally and I took the ferry back form Yarmouth on Monday. We spent some time in the stern, but mostly we watched birds form the bow. We thought it was fantastic. The visibility for birding was good. There was a steady stream of Sharwaters for most of the trip. Here is our e-bird list. If we knew our sea birds better, we would have a much better list. The links are pictures from the bow. I would do the daytime trip.

I'm taking a birding trip to the Canadian Maritimes in a few weeks and was hoping you folks could shed some light on the opportunities to bird from the Portland to Yarmouth, NS ferry.  I've written to the ferry company and they said there is no way to stand at/near the bow to bird, but you can stand near the stern to bird from there.  I'm not sure how successful that might be.  I can take the overnight ride from Portland that only gives about an hour of daylight in Nova Scotia waters before landing in Yarmouth.  Or I can take the day-time ride from Yarmouth to Portland, giving me most of the day to bird both in Nova Scotia and Maine waters.  (I'll be driving through New Brunswick and back to Maine for the other trip to/from the region).

So if the birding potential is still good from the stern, I'll end my trip with a the daytime ferry from Yarmouth.  But if birding is limited, I'll start my trip with the overnight ferry to Yarmouth.

Has anyone tried to bird from this ferry?  Any suggestions?

Many thanks -
