[Maine-birds] Painted Bunting in Mt. Vernon

I received excellent images of a Painted Bunting, immature male I think, in Mt. Vernon. The home owner, my sister, is happy to have birders look for the bird with the following caveats.

Her house is on a very steep section of the North Road just outside Mt. Vernon. From downtown Mt. Vernon (rt 41), turn right on the North Road. Since the road is narrow and steep, it's best to park near the fire station and walk up the hill to her house (300 yards) which is the second house on the right (east) beyond Minnehonk Road. It's called Echo Hill Farm. Do not park on North Road and do not park in her driveway or across the road. It might make sense to drop folks off at the house and have one person park the car in town, about 300 yards away.

There are several feeders visible from the road but there are also several feeders that can be accessed by walking below the house and around the wood shed. Be careful not to get too close to either set of feeders.

Barbara has a pile of poodles and would prefer that they not be disturbed so try and keep a low profile and stay away from windows.

The bunting has been present for several days and seems to be most consistent at 3:00. But it obviously makes sense to check in the morning as well. It was not seen between 10 and 11 today but was present at 3 this afternoon.

Let's hope it remains for a long time.

I can't emphasize enough that the road is steep, narrow, and there's a curve - and that cars often pass by a high speeds. Be very careful and courteous! And good luck.

Best,

Peter
