Re: [Maine-birds] Sandhill Cranes continuing at Carlton Pond

Took a break from CGCF setup yesterday and went kayaking on Carlton Bog.  The Sandhill Cranes were still there.  They were much further up the inlet channel then it seemed possible to paddle so we watched them thru binoculars until some herons nearby flew away and over the cranes.  That got them in the air and off they went to the west end of the lake.  6 Great Blues were counted. Perhaps there were more but they were easily spooked and hard to follow.
The growth at the Bog Road launch site looked intimidating but it was still easy to reach the main channel by paddling thru.

I was in Belfast for the weekend and took the chance to make the 1 hour drive out to Carlton, then the 1/2 hour paddle on the chance they would still be there.  I was overjoyed that they were there.  I watched them for over 1/2 hour and they never flew off.  What a treat.  Life birds for me.
