Folks,
Despite thick fog and intermittant downpours I had an enjoyable 1/2 day of birding at Fort Foster (10 am to 3 pm / on the receeding tide). Highlights included "cracking" looks at a beautiful juvenile Baird's Sandpiper (seen foraging on the beach with other peeps / from the gravel trail that runs between the beach and the marsh); equally nice looks at a Blue-winged Warbler (seen in a mixed flock along the gravel pavilion road that divides the marsh); a total of 8 warbler species (1 Northern Waterthrush, 3 Canada Warblers); 2 Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers; 1 Green Heron & 2 Black-Crowned Night-Herons etc.
Food highlights included a pre-birding Huevos Rancheros Burrito at the Golden Egg (Portsmouth) and post-birding Chicken Enchiladas Verde at Loco Cocos (Kittery)... now we're talking about some seriously good eats on both counts! Regarding the latter meal... I honestly wasn't even hungry but couldn't resist the temptation as I drove past... one of the better "green" sauces I've had since my days in New Mexico... flavorful and spicy!
As a heads up, I talked with one of the park attendents and Fort Foster Park (and the town of Kittery) now has a leash law (for dogs... not birders :). He said that they've been cracking down all summer and it's starting to catch on. The upshot here is that it would help their cause tremendously if on occassion you thanked those respectful enough to leash their dogs and to encourage those (particularly with unruly dogs) that do not:
Peace,
