The Am. White Pelican at Wheeler bay in St. George continued through at least 4:00 p.m. I took some new friends, Mary and Bryan Collier from Scotland, down around noon to look for it, and you could almost pick it out blindfolded (OK, that's a bit of hyperbole). The pelican was of course the main attraction, with everything else being what you would expect along the mid-coast - herring, great black-backed, and laughing gulls, guillemots, loons, kingfishers, eiders, chickadees, phoebes, etc. The Colliers are in the midst of their first trip to Maine, and they came here specifically for the birding. I met them by fortuitous coincidence on Sunday afternoon at South Thomaston's Weskeag Marsh, and had some good shorebirding with them and Don Reimer in Thomaston yesterday as well. They would very much like to see Hooded Mergansers, so I'm wondering if anyone has seen any hoodies anywhere between Lincolnville and Popham Beach - we're planning to check out Popham tomorrow to see what good shorebirds we can find.
