Hey everyone:
The birds at Gilsland Farm continue to be pretty diverse given the time of year with 34 species on Thursday and today's breeze froze us at 28. Here are a few notable birds from this week:
On Thursday we had a gorgeous drake Barrow's Goldeneye feeding along the river near the 295 bridge. This is my first of the season and only my second at Gilsland Farm. A single flyover Horned Lark was a personal highlight as a new patch bird for me. Here is a checklist from 21 Nov: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15725524
Today, a late Yellow-bellied Sapsucker put on a show for us in the apple trees near the environmental center. At the same time a Yellow-rumped Warbler was flitting overhead, making it almost seem more like a mid October day... then the cold wind blew. Here is a complete list from 23 Nov: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15740473
With all the Snowy Owls being reported, I wanted to point everyone to an article Louis Bevier and I wrote for the Maine eBird Portal: http://ebird.org/content/me/news/snowy-owl-invasion/ Included are a couple new reports, totaling at least ten birds in the last week!
Back at eBird central, Maine's own Luke Seitz recently contributed a great article on "November Birding: Urban and Suburban Microclimates": http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/nov-2013-b/
Good birding,
